Store N Go
Verbatim has pleased us with dropping their flash drive in our laps. This drive is called the Store 'N' Go and labeled Economy class. There are more classes for this product, 2 more to be exact. It comes in U3 and Pro classes, as shown in the table below. You can compare and see the differences, courtesy of Verbatim.
The drive is red with aluminum lining around the sides. It feels like the drive has a silk or velour coating, very soft. The materials used for the casing is an ABS resin, I couldn't find much more information on it. There's a blue activity LED on the front, just by the end of the drive, but there is no write protect switch. The cap is shaped in the same way as the drive, making it appear as one solid piece, once removed it can be placed on the back and fit neatly into place again. On the back of the drive there's an indentation, which leaves room for labels. Installation is easy like any other flash drive. Just plug in it, let Windows detect it and access the new drive. The drive comes up with 4 files on it. It has two PDF files, both are manuals, a flash animation and the V-Safe security program. In the manuals you will find how the drive and V-Safe works and the flash animation is to show you the product range of Verbatim. V-Safe is the program to password secure you drive with. First thing to notice about the drive is the mat red color and the feel of the drive. It's a drive with flair. Unpacking the drive presented me with more surprises; it has user labels for on the drive and a very long lanyard or neck strap. Both of these are very practical, I don't come across that often and I was pleasantly surprised. On with the security now, in the shape of VSafe. It will allow you to divide or almost completely secure your drive with a password. I say almost, because there has to be a little room left for the unlocking program part of VSafe. Once you have chosen a password and size of the secured part, the drive will be reformatted. The drive will then be divided into a public zone and a privacy zone. It takes a while to reformat the drive, depending on what size you have selected, but when it's done you can safely store files in the privacy zone.
Once the drive is setup to be secure, you have a login program to unlock your privacy zone and in the privacy zone you have a program to help you logout and secure the privacy zone. A flash drive is usually made up out of two main parts, a USB controller and flash memory. Of course there are some odds and ends, but these are the main components. In this case the USB controller and flash memory are both manufactured by M-Systems, Verbatim's partner. The flash memory is NAND type flash memory. It's interesting to point out the relationship between Verbatim and M-Systems. M-Systems have recently been taken over by SanDisk.
