ATP Petito 1GB

Petito

Good things tend to come in small packages and so does this Petito. It's the world' smallest USB flash drive to date. The size is only about 1.43 inches big and it comes in 4 colors namely dark blue, silver, gold and titanium. In the next picture you can actually see the true size of the Petito, the picture is true scale.

The upper part holds the memory and the lower part, underneath the cap is the USB connector. The USB connector makes up half its size. The design is very stylish and also very sturdy. This is due to the System-In-Package or SIP technology. It provides protection from dust, water, shock and ESD (Electro-Static Discharge). Also accompanied with the drive is a wrist strap for easy carrying. Although with a design like this, you could consider wearing it as jewelry. One thing the drive doesn't have is an activity LED, to show whether or not it's still active. To top all these features off it also comes with a 2 year warranty.

Installation is like so many other flash drives a piece of cake. Unless you are using Windows 98 SE, you don't need a driver to install first. Windows detects the drive by itself and installs it properly. Of course the drive does support different operating systems like MacOS and Linux. When installed the drive has two volumes, one contains the security software and the manual and is 1.44 MB big, the other volume is the real storage drive of 1 GB. The smaller volume also gets marked as a floppy drive and the bigger as harddisk.

The Petito boasts about its whopping 30MB/s transfer speed and SIP packaging. In the next page I'll try and put those features to the test and see if it can hold its own between the rest of the flash drives and I'll even try out the water proofing on the drive.

To secure the drive there's a small piece of software located on the smaller volume of the drive. It enables you to password protect the drive and as soon as you unplug the drive it becomes secured. The password can hold up to 16 characters and you can install a hint for when you have forgotten the password, it holds 32 characters. You can't plug in two drives and use the software, because the software can only service one Petito drive at a time. In the main dialog of the security program there's also a 'to HDD' button, this button is to copy the entire contents to your harddisk, its not recommended unless you want to wipe your harddisk and copy the USB drive contents on it.
