Installation
Installing Nero is very easy, you simply start by executing the setup and it will guide you through the procedure.
It will show you a couple of choices you can make during the installation, starting with your name and serial number, of course.
This is followed by the choice, if you want to install the regular options or if you want to customize the installation options.

As you can see there are many programs, utilities and tools that install with Nero.
In the past, the package was divided into separate pieces, such as Nero Recode, Nero Burning Rom, Nero Vision etc.
Here you get them all installed from one package and of course you can deselect them as you wish.
InCD is turned off at default, from what I hear most people don't use it anyway, it seems to be a problematic program.
Nero hosts support for a lot of languages, the standard being English and German, but you can select a lot more languages.
You can change this after the installation as well, should you have chosen badly when you installed it. I've kept it in English.
Once you have made your selections, Nero will finish up the installation by installing the files and making the proper registry settings.
The final choice will be the file associations for Nero.

Left at default, Nero will not only associate the more exotic file associations, but also the more common ones, like mp3, wav, avi, mpg, to name a few.
I didn't like these associations right off the bat, so I turned these off.
There are two buttons which allow you to either select all associations or none, but there's is no choice to select the unused file associations, which I would have preferred.
One thing that did catch my eye, the installation package is English and my language selection is English, yet the setup language is set to my default regional settings in Windows, which are Dutch.
You can see this in the images shown above.
Also since release version 7, there's been a new update out already in the form of a demo package.
It installs as a demo version despite of using a valid full version key, this is purely cosmetic.
However this indicates that some kinks in the installation process still need to be worked out.
Nero has indicated it will release a sort of fix for the demo "update" in December.
You can see that Nero Scout is enabled; I will explain a little bit more about this tool later on in this review.
Nero had no problems whatsoever to install on Windows XP x64.
It's not recommended to install InCD yet though, because it's not supported on x64.
The default install location will be the x86 location of the program files.
Also Nero ImageDrive will not show up in the installation selection, because it simple will not work on Windows XP x64.
The installation package is MSI based.
This means that we might see the ability to slipstream updates into our installation CD in the near future.
Nero didn't go into this option in depth, but they did say the new installer gives them the freedom for a new delivery system.
Using a small installer, you can then pick and choose which programs you want to install and download, thus giving you a fully customized installation package based on your needs, without having to download the whole package.
This will become available in January next year in the next demo/update.
