Transfer and Playback tests
So far in this review we have reported on how well/bad the Verbatim 4x DVD-R Dual Layer media has performed on our 5 review recording devices and given you a good idea as to how many errors may be left on the media for a playback or Transfer device to correct according to our Plextor PX-716A using PXScan. One thing this hasn't told us is just how well the recorded media can be transfered at high speeds, although we can with experience draw an educated opinion on whether the discs will transfer ok.
Of course playback will be performed at 1x on a DVD playback device and so judging by the results we have shown up to now during our other tests we should have no problems with playback on any of the Verbatim 4x DVD-R Dual Layer media we have recorded to our review recording devices with the exception of maybe the Liteon-IT 1693S with firmware KS04.
Small slowdowns are accepted for a perfect transfer but what we don't want to see is any places with data refuses to transfer on the Plextor PX-716A or any of the recordings refusing to playback properly on our review playback devices.
Below you will find the results of the Transfer tests on the Plextor PX-716A which we feel is our fastest and most reliable Dual Layer reading device.
Results show that the Plextor PX-716A encountered no fatal errors during the CD Speed transfer tests, reaching its maximum single layer reading speed of 8x for all pieces of the Verbatim 4x DVD-R Dual Layer media used for this review. Given these facts we feel there are no reasons why we should see no problems with playback on these devices used for these tests with all the recordings producing acceptable to very good results dependant on recording device.
Our final test is the playback test of a DVD Video. For this review we chose the Liteon-IT 1693S with firmware KS04 to record a DVD Video compilation with CopyToDVD of 8147Mb (7.96GB) in size to the Verbatim 4x DVD-R Dual Layer media, again at its rated speed of 4x. During the Disc Quality tests we kept finding that the Liteon-IT 1693S with firmware KS04 produced the least favourable results and so that is why we decided this would be the drive we used for this particular test.
Again we will back this up by doing a Transfer test at high speed on the Plextor PX-716A.

As expected at a read speed of 1x the recording of the Verbatim 4x DVD-R Dual Layer media on the Liteon-IT 1693S showed no problems with playback in all but one of our tested standalone DVD playback devices which was the Cyberhome 512 - a very old DVD player and maybe excuses can be made for this device and the Liteon-IT 1693S which would read it but after a very long seek and spinup period of around 2 minutes. Fast forwarding the DVD Video compilation at 16x on our PRISM standalone DVD player did not show any areas where the high speed fast forwarding stopped. We would also like to reconfirm that a high speed transfer on this disc did not produce any slowdowns either that may have an impact on the quality of the disc.
