Verbatim 2.4x DVD+R D/L media review (outdated)

home - reviews - dvd media reviews

Posted on 30 Dec 2004 by SirQUK

Introduction

Update: This review has now been updated with a new one located here with 5 of the latest popular DVD Writers. We have left this review here as it contains for 4x over speed results not covered in the new review yet.

As always, please ensure your DVD Writer has the latest firmware to get the best compatibility with this new media.

In a review update we can bring our readers test results from more writers thanks to Verbatim-Europe who have very kindly supplied us with some more of their 2.4x rated Double Layer media.

The review drives now consist of:

  • BenQ DW 1620 with firmware B7T9
  • NEC 3500 AG with firmware 2.18
  • Liteon-IT 1653S with firmware CS09
  • Pioneer DVR 108 with firmware 1.18
  • NEC 3520 with firmware 1.05 LDb3

** This review is being updated since 01/02/05 and when this line is removed the review is complete. It may be mising some tests results upto that point - we thank you for your patience.

We thank Verbatim-Europe for their ongoing support of our reviews - Its most appreciated by us and our readers.

"The new 2.4x DVD+R media expands the data storage capacity from 4.7GB to a massive 8.5GB on a single side. This means that consumers will be able to record up to four hours of DVD-quality. Of utmost importance is the fact that compatibility is maintained with existing DVD video players and DVD ROM drives."

"Verbatim is an active member of the DVD+RW Alliance and this development clearly illustrates its desire and ability to work closely with hardware manufacturers."

Here are some advantages of using Double Layer Media:

Double Layer media offers genuine advantage over the current single layer 4.7GB DVD. The Verbatim 8.5GB Double Layer recordable DVD+R D/L disc allows users to read, write or view almost twice the amount of data that is currently possible with the single layer and the advanced technology means that material can be read or recorded on one layer without affecting the other.

No need to flip sides or change discs, this new media from Verbatim means real convenience as well as fast, reliable storage with a wide range of playback options.

This media is actually seen as 4x capable in all of our review devices, although this review will concentrate on the recording at the medias rated speed. We hope to add the 4x over speed results as more media becomes available to us.
