Conclusion
The Verbatim 16x DVD+R media media recorded perfectly at its rated speed of 16x on 3 out 4 of our review drives with the Pioneer DVR 108 recording this media at a speed of 12x which was the maximum available speed for the drive under present firmware. The Disc Quality results were very impressive on the BenQ 1620A and the NEC 3500A for a 16x recording and the PIoneer DVR 108, although only recording this media at 12x again showed very impressive results making us believe that a futute update to this drive will allow for 16x recording with good results. The Liteon-IT 1633S Disc Quality test result was very disapointing, producing the worst result out of all the drives and causing slowdowns during the NEC 3500 transfer test which we hope is improved in future Liteon-IT firmware updates for this drive.
CD Speed gave similar scan results in the region of +/- 5% on all 5 pieces tested in each of the review drives, showing to this reviewer that the Verbatim 16x DVD+R was of a very consistent quality and no C2 failures (displayed as 'POFS' in CD Speeds Disc Quality test) where reported.
Note on Verification tests:
"We will only show sector scanning and verification results if the recorded media had problems resulting in errors being found. If you dont see a verification test in our new style of media reviews then the you can safely assume none where found during our tests."
All the software and hardware DVD Players played the DVD without the Booktype being change without error. One exception was the Cyberhome 512 standalone DVD Player, which we find to be consistent with other similar tests on DVD+R media of high quality and the Cyberhome device. Changing the Booktype to that of DVD-ROM with both the BenQ 1620A and Liteon-IT 1633S review drives resulted in the Cyberhome being able to read the disc although near the end of the playback test on the Verbatim 16x+R media recorded on the LIteon-IT 1633S, a couple of stutters where noticed.
"Although not many modern day standalone and console devices have issues with DVD+R media without the Booktype change, it is in CDR-Zone.com's opinion, nice to have the ability to change this setting for the older players that are still around."
Judging by the results of our tests, 16x seems a good optimised recording speed for this media with the BenQ 1620Q and NEC 3500 under present firmwares. We would like to think that both the Pioneer DVR 108 should be capable of even faster than the presently available 12x and the Liteon-IT capable of even better recording in the future as it was the only drive not to show how good the Verbatim 16x+R media was. All the other drives used during this review showed nothing but very good results for this media during our tests assuring us that the Verbatim quality control does not seem to suffer at high recording speeds as a whole.
The disc itself retains the now familiar verbatim frosted silver design with the Verbatim logo and rated recording speed in silver, with 3 clear lines for writing your information about the stored information on the disc. Packaging comes in either Jewel case or Spindle form to best suit your storage needs.
