Available speed and recording tests

VSO Inspector from VSO Software was used for gathering our information about the available recording speeds this Verbatim 16x DVD-R media could be recorded at on our review recording devices. This media information utility allows us to easily see the rated speeds available for the Verbatim 16x DVD-R media according to the hardware used during this review as wel as the full Media ID code for the media.

As mentioned on page one of this review, the hardware used for these tests consisted of the NEC 3500AG, NEC ND-3520, Pioneer DVR 108, Philips DVDR1640 and the Liteon-IT 1653S, all of which are maximum recording speeds of 16x although we will point out that the Liteon-IT 1653S maximum rated recording speed of 16x is for DVD+R media only under present firmware and 12x for DVD-R.

Once the maximum available recording speeds for each device had been discovered using VSO Inspector CD Speed from Ahead software was used to record a test DVD of maximum capacity to see if the review recording devices achieved their maximum recording speed. The DVD's created with here with CD Speed will be used later on during the Disc Quality, Transfer and Verification tests.

Available Recording Speeds

We used VSO inspector from VSO Software for gathering our information about the Available speeds as well as Media ID.

Pioneer DVR 108 with firmware version 1.18

Philips DVDR1640 with firmware version 3.4

NEC ND-3520 with firmware version 1.04

NEC 3500 AG with firmware version LDv2.TA

LiteOn 1653S with firmware version CS0G

All the review drives saw the Verbatim 16x DVD-R media has capable of recording at its rated speed of 16x except for the Liteon-IT 1653S which reported a maximum DVD-R recording speed of 12x. This is its maximum available recording speed for DVD-R media at present.

Create CD Tests at rated speed

The Create CD function from CD Speed was used to record the maximum amount of data possible to the Verbatim 16x DVD-R media at its maximum available speed on all review drives.

Pioneer DVR 108 with firmware version 1.18

Philips DVDR1640 with firmware version 3.4

NEC ND-3520 with firmware version 1.04

NEC 3500 AG with firmware version LDv2.TA

LiteOn 1653S with firmware version CS0G

Overview of recording times:

The NEC 3500 AG reported the fasted recording time closely followed by the NEC ND-3520 and Philips DVDR1640. The Pioneer DVR 108 16x recording was no faster than its 12x recordings have reported during our reviews and the Liteon-IT achieved the slowest recording time being 2 minutes slower than the NEC 3500 AG at its maximum 12x recording speed.

Overview of recording times

These are the recordings that come closest to being the average recording times in each of our review drives.

Writer used:Average recording time
3500 AG NEC (firmware: LDv2.TA)5:42
ND-3520 NEC (firmware: 1.04)5:54
DVDR1640 Philips (firmware: 3.4)6:04
DVR 108 Pioneer (firmware: 1.18)6:44
1653S LiteOn (firmware: CS0G)7:48

Of course achieving the fastest recording speed does not always mean you achive the best quality recording and it must be pointed out that most users would not record a 16x media on a drive that has a supported speed of 12x (we have used the Liteon-IT 1653 for comparison only ). Please read on to see what our other tests discovered about the recorded media during our Disc Quality and Transfer tests.
