Ricoh 16x DVD+R media review

home - reviews - dvd media reviews

Posted on 9 Mar 2005 by SirQUK

Introduction

In this latest high speed media review we get to take a closer look at the the new Ricoh 16x DVD+R media has been released in the last month. We ordered some without hestitation to see if it is as good as our previous Ricoh media has been. The Ricoh 8x DVD+R media was a very popular choice with consumers who needed fast reliable recording with the ability to over speed to upto 16x on certain recording devices. Infact the over speeding to this media has filled the gap for many users until this eagerly awaited release from Ricoh.

We have found during past reviews and by reading many online media and hardware forums a well as some in house testing that Ricoh media always seem to be highly compatiable with many recording devices due to Ricohs high quality standards. Although this is a new media we would expect the research and design team from Ricoh to be working very closely with hardware manufacturers to ensure that their 16x DVD+R media is as widely compatiable as earlier 4x and 8x versions have been.

"The DVD+R 16x from Ricoh is a newly developed premium quality storage medium which stores data at 16x speed. The DVD+R 16x – utilises Ricoh’s exclusive, highly sensitive coating technology, and is produced using high-precision tools. The high production quality guarantees a secure high-speed recording process. Further benefits of the new medium include extreme longevity and high levels of compatibility."

The recording devices used for this review consist of:

  • BenQ 1620A with firmware B7T9
  • NEC 3500 AG with firmware 2.TB
  • Pioneer DVR 108 with firmware 1.18
  • NEC 3520 with firmware 1.U7
  • Liteon-IT 1653S with firmware CS0G

Our review media in a spindle of 25 with this spindle being shrink wrapped and very nice and tightly packed into a proper spindle sized box ensuring no damage could be caused during shipping. The disc itself is the full face printable version of this disc wlthough a non printable version is also available. The country where this media was manufactured was Taiwan which is usual for Ricoh media.

The recording surface is a light purple and carries the Media ID of RICOHJPN R03-04 according to VSO Inspector and should be capable of speeds of upto 16x on our review devices.
