Available speed and recording tests

VSO Inspector from VSO Software was used for gathering our information about the available recording speeds the Miflop Xtreme 16x DVD+R media on our review recording devices. This media information utility allows us to easily see the rated speeds available for the Miflop Xtreme 16x DVD+R media according to the hardware used during this review as well as tell us the full Media ID code for the media.

Once the maximum available recording speeds for each device had been discovered using VSO Inspector, Nero CD-DVD Speed from Ahead software was used to record a test DVD of maximum capacity to see if the review recording devices achieved their maximum recording speed.

We used VSO inspector from VSO Software for gathering our information about the Available speeds as well as Media ID code.

LG Electronics GSA-4166B [OEM] with firmware version 1.02

Pioneer DVR 110 [OEM] with firmware version 1.39

Philips DVDR1660P1 [Retail] with firmware version P1.3

NEC ND-4551A [OEM] with firmware version 1.07

Plextor PX-755A [Retail] with firmware version 1.02

All of the review recording devices where capable of supporting the Miflop Xtreme 16x DVD+R media at its rated maximum speed of 16x. It is always good to see a brand of media fully supported by all review recording devices at the time of its release. It certainly shows that the pre release testing was successful in our eyes.

The DVD's created here in our first test with Nero CD-DVD Speed will be used later on during the Disc Quality, Transfer and Verification tests. After allowing each drive one piece of media to learn, 5 pieces of media where written to each drive to gain an average result. Only results under default settings are shown here.

Nero CD-DVD Create CD Tests

The Create CD function from CD Speed was used to record the maximum amount of data possible to the Miflop Xtreme 16x DVD+R media at its maximum available speed on all review drives.

"Of course achieving the fastest recording speed does not always mean you achive the best quality recording as we will be quick to point out to our readers. There is no point in having the fastest recording if the quality suffers! Hardware manufacturers do sometimes slow media down in firmwares or limit the max speed for each particular piece of media recorded to achieve the best quality possible and prevent a bad recording."

Please read on to see what our other tests discovered about the recorded media during our Disc Quality, Transfer and Playback tests.
