Miflop Xtreme 16x DVD+R media review

home - reviews - dvd media reviews

Posted on 16 Nov 2005 by SirQUK

Introduction

Just recently CDR-Zone.COM released a review of the Plextor 16x DVD+R media. Users of Taiyo Yuden media did notice one thing - this was the non printable dye. Now I can show the results of the Taiyo Yuden 16x DVD+R printable media. Under the Miflop Xtreme branding we have sourced this media so that our readers can have a great idea of just how good/bad the compatibility is with a series of popular DVD recording and playback devices compared to the non printable version.

We are really quite excited about this review as many readers will know just how well the Miflop Xtreme 8x+/-R range of media could record at speeds of 12x and above on most writers. Of course from the review of the Plextor version I found that slightly higher errors where found compared to what users would expect from a disc made by Taiyo Yuden although still very much within set specifications. Has that changed - are errors still higher than we would like to see from this mixture of Taiyo Yuden and MIflop or has the error rate decresed? Those are some of the questions I hope to find the answer to during the course of this review.

The fact that Miflop have chosen to continue their relationship with such a well established company as Taiyo Yuden (the company that is regarded as the leaders in recordable media excellence) to produce their first ever range of 16x DVD+R media is again a very good sign that they want there Xtreme line of 16x media to be of the best possible quality. Available in both printable and silver top versions, in this review we get to test the full face printable version of the Miflop Xtreme 16x DVD+R media.

Some information on the media about Miflop media:

"Miflop Media is amongst the top 5 European Taiyo Yuden offical partners and iwork very hard to gaurantee the top grade of Taiyo Yuden media available today through their Miflop Xtreme range of media. Buy and record in confidence with media from the worlds leading brand name for Digital media quality."

Our review media came to us in a spindle of 100 with the spindle being shrink wrapped and very nice and tightly packed into a Miflop branded box offering plenty of protection during shipping. The disc itself that we are reviewing, as mentioned is from the Xtreme range and is a full face printable version of this disc although a non printable, silver top version is also available if so desired.

The recording surface is a light purple and carries the Media ID of YUDEN000-T03-00 according to VSO Inspector and should be capable of speeds of upto 16x on our review devices. Taiyo Yuden produced arguably the best 8x DVD+R disc ever and so it is with special interest that we see if the things that the 8x DVD+R version such a big hit with recording enthusiasts are present on the 16x DVD+R version.

We must also point out that this review comes at a time when some DVD Writers may not have fully optimised support in their firmware at present just like when we reviewed the DVD-R version. Although, that said, with the reputation for thorough testing that Taiyo Yuden are normally renowned for, we would expect very good support

For the real media quality enthusiast, the batch number codes on the inner circle of the media are clearly marked TH001330 and 0101 respectively.
