Imation 16x DVD+R media review

home - reviews - dvd media reviews

Posted on 21 Sep 2006 by SirQUK

Introduction

Imation, a range of media yet to be reviewed at CDR-Zone.COM in any format. So when the chance came along to test the latest 16x DVD+R media thanks to Troy and the gang at Dvdshoponline I was very interested to give it a good workout in the Zone basement.

"Extended functionality:

With Imation DVD+R discs, you can store literally thousands of digital photographs. Or, store up to two hours of digital video in SP Mode or four hours in EP Mode. The DVD media recording speed of up to 22 MB per second which is equivalent to a CD-R recording speed of 140x. Ideal for anyone requiring data-intensive, high-performance data storage.

Features:

  • 4.7GB capacity
  • Premium metal azo dye for recording layer
  • Holds seven times more data than a full size CD-R
  • High-speed recording
  • Discs can be read by DVD+RW drives
  • Will play back in majority of DVD-ROM drives & DVD Video players
  • Available in 2.4x, 4x, 8x and 16x recording speeds*

* Watch out for labels on products, only products labeled for 4x, 8x and 16x are certified for the equivalent recording speed.

Please Note: Packaging can differ dependant on country sold.

The Imation 16x DVD+R media arrived in 2 value spindles of 25. This is fast becoming the most popular and price competitive way of selling DVD recordable media to the end user. It's an easy and convenient way to store quantities of discs in a very small place whilst it can also provide at least some good protection against the wear and tear of transport. On the outside of the spindle there is all the information you require about the media such as the contact details, brand name, recording speed, product reference and contact details. It tells us that this media was manufactured in India by Moser Baer India although I will be quick to point out that there is no reference to who actually makes this media on the packaging.

For the real media quality enthusiast, the batch number codes on the inner circle of the media are clearly marked 2523 430 +R E A 17403 and DVD+R16OFP1 respectively. Further inspection of the packaging confirms that this media is 16x compatible and carries a limited lifetime warranty ( please see here for more details of warranty ).It is also avaible in Jewel case versions for the user that wants this type of storage solution but this will add considerable extra cost to the price of this media.

Recording devices used for this review

As always, please ensure your DVD Writer has the latest firmware to get the best compatibility with this new media.

NEC ND-4551 A [OEM] with firmware version 1-08

Liteon SHM-165P6S[Retail] with firmware version MV9N

Plextor PX-760A Premium [Retail] with firmware version 1.04

Philips DVDR1660P1[Retail] with firmware version P1.6

Pioneer DVR 111D[OEM] with firmware version 1.29

A question which I have been asked quite a few times since starting my reviews is 'How do you decide on what brands of writer you use?'. With this in mind I have decided to layout exactly how I choose my recording devices in this part of the review for those that really care!. I use devices such as NEC, Lite-On and Pioneer based drives as they most reflect what are some of the most popular OEM recording devices on the market, whilst the Plextor and Philips drives cover the retail section of the market - its that simple! I could of course use other recording devices but this policy has served me well so far in comparing results from the respective available markets.
