Media Compatibility
A selection of various Single Layer 2.4x, 4x and 8x +/-, as well as CD\RW media was recorded on to the Pioneer DVR 108 to see if the rated speeds where reached using Nero Burning Rom and CopyToDVD 3 to record various VIDEO and DATA compilations.
As it is a newer drive, older media should not be a problem for this drive and we would expect it to record to all the tested media correctly.
Here's a list of all the media that was tested in the Pioneer DVR 108 with firmware 1.06, the rated recording speeds and dye codes, as well as the speed reached during recording:

** Note:: This is by way of the Pioneer DVR 10s's over burning feature
discussed later in this review.
As you can see from the above table the v1.10 firmware of this drive can record almost all DVD+/-R media past its rated speed during our recording tests, although it must be noted that some of the media was only recognised at 4x instead of 8x, something we hope will be resolved very soon with a firmware upgrade.
The Taiyo Yunden 40x CDR used in these tests where recognised at the DVR 108s maximum CD recording speed of 32x. It must also be noted that according to both VSO inspector and Nero CD Speed, a large quantity of our DVD media was able to be written past its rated speed ( known as over speeding ), most notably the Verbatim 2.4x DVD+R D/L media being recognised at 4x! - we will bring you some screenshots of this recording a little later in the review.
Another interesting note to point out to our readers from the above table is that the RICOHJPN R01-02 dye used on our printable 4x+R media was not able to be written past its rated speed of 4x, although our Plextor 708 can record to them at 8x and the NEC 2510A can write to them at 6x. During our tests the Pioneer DVR 108 showed very good compatibility with a wide range of CDRW\DVDRW media. The Pioneer DVR 108 was also able to read the Verbatim 2.4x DVD+R D/L media that we placed in it without any problems, but although our Traxdata 2.4x D/L media was recognised and recorded too, it was not readable in the Pioneer itself, although it was easily recognised and read in the Liteon 1213s and NEC 2510A. This is another thing that Pioneer need to fix in a future firmware upgrade.
