Introduction
Many thanks must to goto BigPockets for sending us this Pioneer DVDR 108 recordable drive to review for
our CDR-Zone readers - The worlds first Multiple Format 16x DVD Writer with 4x +R
double layer recording capability.
"With the facility to write 4.7GB of data to write-once media in seven minutes, or store up to 8.5GB on Double Layer media, the DVR-A08 enhances a wide range of DVD applications including the authoring, editing and storing of video files, developing digital music catalogues, building image libraries and backing up data.
Pioneer launches its new multiple format DVD writer. The DVR-A08 is the industry's first DVD writer to support 16x write speeds on both DVD-R/+R* along with the option to write at 4x speed on Double Layer media. This extends Pioneer's track record of establishing key performance benchmarks when introducing new DVD writers."
In this review we will try various 4x and 8x+/-W as well as a 2.4x and 4x Double Layer media with the Pioneer DVDR 108 to see if it to record or read these types of present day single media as well as the ability to read and record to Double layer DVD+R Double Layer media. Double layer media has just hit our shelves, and will be very expensive for the first 6 months or until it becomes more popular so having good support for single layer media as well as the ability to read and record to Double Layer media is a plus point for any recorder that comes on to the market at the moment. The drive has the ability the over burn Pioneer recommended media up to 16x, as well as the ability to also over burn certain Double Layer at 4x.
To verify media compatibility, we will also run disc scans, file checking and
verification tests with both VSO Inspector and Nero Info Tool to check if the recorded media contains any errors after recording with this new drive. The recorded media will be scanned with K-Probe to see how well the drive recorded to the media and then
the media will be played in various PC and standalone DVD players to see if there is smooth playback, or if any 'skipping' or 'jerking'.
The firmware used for this review was v1.10 which is the latest firmware Pioneer had available for download at the time of writing this review, obtained from the Omnipatcher website.
