Introduction
Many thanks must to goto BigPockets for sending us this BENQ DW 1600 recordable drive to review for our CDR-Zone readers. Increasing the speed of single layer DVD recording up to 16x for DVD+R media, meaning that 4.7 Gb of information can now be recorded in under 6 minutes. Offering a free firmware upgrade to full DVD-R support as well as its present DVD+R/ and D/L recording capabilities the BENQ DW 1600 is the worlds first 16X capable DVD Writer.
In this review we will try various 4x and 8x+//W as well as a 12x+R and 16x DVD Single Layer media with the BENQ DW 1600 to see if it to record or read these types of present day single media as well as the ability to read and record to Double layer DVD+R Dual Layer media. Double layer media has just hit our shelves, and will be very expensive for the first 6 months or until it becomes more popular so having good support for single layer media as well as the ability to read and record to Double Layer media is a plus point for any recorder that comes on to the market at the moment.
To verify media compatability, we will also run disc scans, file checking and verification tests with VSO Inspector, Nero Info Tool and DVDInfo Pro to see if the recorded media contains any errors after recording with this new drive. The recorded media will be scanned with K-Probe to see how well the drive recorded to the media and then the media will be played in various PC and standalone DVD players to see if there is smooth playback, or if any 'skipping' or 'jerking'.
The firmware used for this review was B5G9 which is the latest firmware available at the time of writing this review.
