"Toshiba announced today that it will launch the Qosmio G30 laptop in Europe in April. The laptop will feature a built-in HD-DVD drive, and will launch in Japan and North America at about the same time.
The G30 will be the follow-up to the Qosmio G20 notebook, and will be priced similarly depending upon configuration. Currently, the G20 begins at around $2,400.
The Qosmio G30 will feature HDMI-out, and can be connected to an HDTV or monitor with support for HDCP.
Toshiba leads the HD-DVD camp, in opposition to the Sony lead Blu-ray technology. Both electronics giants plan to integrate their favored next-gen DVD technology in many of their product lines to help build an installation base.
Though HD-DVD will initially only be offered in Toshiba's high-end Qosmio notebook line, Toshiba expects that some models in the lower-tier Satellite line may offer HD-DVD by the end of 2006."
Of course it comes with a pretty hefty pricetag too. Retailing at around $2,400 it isn't something the average end user of laptops might want to consider just yet. In late 2006 we may see the budget Satellite models also having HD-DVD capabilities.
