Whilst browsing through the news sites I found this latest bit of information about a new chipset from Panasonic designed to combine support for multiple recording formats including Blu ray , DVDR, CDR and DVD-RAM. This information was sourced from the PC Pro website.
"Panasonic, a leading backer of the Blu-ray high definition DVD format, has unveiled a new chipset that will enable optical disc drives to play and record DVDs and CDs as well as Blu-ray (BD) discs.
The chipset is the first to combine support for multiple DVD (RAM, DVD-R, DVD-RW, DVD-ROM, DVD+R, DVD+RW) and all CD formats with BD, something that has been considered necessary if PC makers are to be convinced to begin supplying BD drives with computers.
The chipset comprises two chips: a front-end processor for analog processing such as servo control and laser power control, and a optical disc controller for signal processing as digital lead channel. It includes a series of part numbers for either ATAPI or Serial-ATA interfaces.
The first sample shipments will go out in December with production to start the following month.
Drives based on the HD-DVD format will be able to read both DVDs and CDs, but no write support for the older formats has yet been announced."
Well its a step in the right direction in our opnion here at CDR-Zone.COM but it would be nice to have a device that did HD-DVD at the same time ( are we asking too much this early on in development )
