CDR-Info have released news about Phillips plans to release details of their Dual Layer 8.5 gb DVD Recorder at CEBIT."Philips will present on the Cebit the DVD double Layer burner "DVDRW 885K". The burner burns DVD+R blanks with nearly the double capacity compared to the present DVD burners.
All data will be able to fit on a double Layer blank 8.5 dvd. The drive’s primary speed on a DVD+R is at 8x burning speed and on the second Layer 4x. On DVD+RWs the drive will be able to write only on single layer dvd’s and with the speed of 4x. The DVD R(W) reading speed is at 12x, and the CD Burning speed is at 24x10x40x." The DVD burner only known so far as the “DVDRW 885K” will be available in the market from the third quarter of 2004.I personally thing this could bring us to an interesting scenario where popular transcoding utilities such as DVDXCopy and Clone DVD will no longer be as prominent in the minds of owners who presently use them for their backup needs, as most DVDs will be able to backuped up without compression.
