Palo Alto (CA) - Hewlett-Packard (HP) today announced the first available DVD burner with Lightscribe technology. The LiteOn-built device allows users to write labels directly onto the DVD surface.
The new drive is the first result of cooperation announcement last month in which LiteOn was presented as exclusive manufacturer, distributor and marketer for HP-branded optical drives. The "dvd640i" comes with common performance features such as Dual-Layer capability for writing 8.5 GByte discs in 2.4x speed and single-layer DVD+R burning in 16x.
The interesting feature of the drive however is the integration of HP's disc-labeling technology named "Lightscribe". The feature allows users to burn data first and then simply turn the disc around to burn a label in a process similar to silk screen printing. According to HP, Lightscribe labels are permanent and cannot cause damage to a DVD. Users can print texts, images or own designs onto the surface of the disc.
HP offers the dvd640i for $130 through its website.
