Inphase technologies, a company founded in 2000, announced yesterday that they have developed several prototypes of a holographic storage drive, which moves holographic storage moves from research to commercialization.
According to an Inphase spokesman, a single disk would hold a storage capacity that would range from 200 GigaBytes upto 1.6 TeraBytes (the equivalent to 1600 GigaBytes).
"This technology offers the highest density and performance of any optical system and will assume a prominent role in the storage landscape," said Nelson Diaz, president and chief executive officer of InPhase, in a statement.
The technique w works with Blu-ray 407nm blue lasers to provide high capacity holographic storage. The data is recorded into two-chemistry photopolymer WORM (write once, read many) material. This is 1.5 mm thick and is sandwiched between two transmissive plastic disks.
The drive will be demonstrated at the 2005 Storage Visions conference, being held in Las Vegas. The company expects to begin shipping next year.
