"NEXT GENERATION formats HD-DVD and Blu-Ray have been put onto the backburner thanks to worries in the movie business that the copyright protection system is not up to scratch.
Both systems use the Advanced Access Content System (AACS) which has been delayed because members of its licensing authority cannot agree on a final specification.
The problem is to do with BD+ anti-piracy measure which allows for changing encryption schemes midstream. This enables the Bluray people to change the entire encryption system if it is ever cracked.
The AACS wants more information on this particular system before it settles on its standard. Since HD-DVD and Blu-ray need the standard to be agreed on, it means that both are in a holding pattern above the metaphorical airport waiting for the air traffic controller to fetch a nice cup of tea and perhaps a Hob Nob.
The move is expected to push the planned Spring releases of HD DVD and Blu-ray back by a month or more. "
The Inquirer also provide some useful links to other relevant stories on their site. My opinion? Well it was bound to happen - things never run smoothly in the recordable media industry it seems. Still we can make do with 8x-16x Double Layer media while we await the new formats. 8x Double Layer is already being manufacturered by the big names such as Verbatim, Ritek and Ricoh, with the faster speeds due soon.
