DigiTimes has an article online about the launch of the first EVD players on the chinese market. The appearance of EVD is regarded by some as a challenge to the "Blue Ray," a next-generation disc technology, which is being jointly developed by a number of global electronics companies like Sony, Samsung and Philips.
"
SVA Group, a large manufacturer of consumer electronics and IT products headquartered in Shanghai, will launch EVD (enhanced versatile disk) players at a retail price of over 2,000 yuan by the end of this year.
EVD is a new standard being promoted by China’s Ministry of Information Industry (MII) as an alternative to the DVD standard in China. Although it does not completely avoid MPEG-2 patents, it minimizes any potential royalties. SVA is a member of the group of 10 companies, which operates under the name Beijing E-World Technology, which has developed the standard.
The market in China is easily large enough to support EVD players. However, SVA still has to resolve two problems: EVD players are currently more expensive than DVD players and output may not be sufficient to meet demand.
Since SVA is focused on the domestic market and does not offer licensing of its EVD technology to other makers, EVD players may remain confined to the Greater China region and the standard may not penetrate other markets."
After reading this news, I also found another article on EVD, which has some additional information on EVD. In this article, they think that EVD can become the new standard:
"Analysts, however, have pointed out that it is hard to say whether EVD technology will be quickly accepted on a global basis, even though it may find its niche in the vast Chinese market."
We will try to keep you informed about this upcoming standard in future newsposts. For now, you can probably find some more interesting articles on EVD in Google.
