Some news of great interest from the very informative DigiTimes website concerning DVD+R/+RW standards.
"The DVD+RW Alliance on November 9 held a symposium in Taipei in an attempt to persuade leading makers of optical discs in Taiwan to adopt DVD+R/+RW standards. The alliance’s representatives for this conference came mainly from Sony, Ricoh, and Royal Philips.
The DVD+RW Alliance charges lower royalty rates than the DVD Forum (advocating DVD-R/-RW/-RAM) and other DVD standards, these representatives pointed out. In addition, the DVD+RW Alliance requires certification by Philips or Sony for licensed use of the alliance’s logo, while the DVD Forum only asks for royalty fees for using its logo, these representatives indicated.
The required certification results in much higher compatibility of DVD+R DL (single-sided double-layer) discs with DVD burners of various brands than that of DVD-R DL discs, these representatives emphasized. Tests conducted in Japan show that DVD+R DL discs are compatible with 94% of DVD burners available for sale whereas compatibility for DVD-R DL discs is only 10%, these representatives added.
Will they, wont they? We hope they do for sure! better compatibility for the DVD-R DL standard is needed badly!
