In the crackdown on piracy, the chinese government has announced a piracy hot line for tipsters, offering rewards of up to $36,000. It is not the first time china is offering awards for tips on illegal video and audio factories, but the rewards have never been this high.
"The Chinese government's commitment to protecting intellectual property rights is very serious," the report quoted Liu Binjie, deputy head of the National Office for Cracking Down on Pornography and Piracy, as saying. "We not only need to improve China's economic environment, but more importantly, we are eager to protect our nation's ability to innovate."
Pirated DVD movies are available on almost every corner on the streets of the major Chinese cities, often for as little as $0.70cts a piece.
