Apple Computer Supporting Blu-Ray DVD Format

Apple Computer Inc. has reported that they will be supporting the Blu-ray format for the next generation DVD's. This selection was made over the rival format known as HD-DVD and is another step in setting the new standard for recording high-definition video.
Either technology promises more storage capacity and greater video quality compared to the current DVD formats. These new technologies also provide the ability to record high-definition video and can be used to store movies, games, photos, as well as other digital data.
Apple said in a statement that they will also becoming a member of the Blu-ray Disc Association Board of Directors. This is a consortium that supports and promotes the Blu-ray format. Other members of the alliance include Dell Inc., Sony Corp., Samsung Electronics Co. Ltd., Matsushita Electric Industrial Co., and the Walt Disney Co. the HD-DVD format is supported by NEC Corp., and Toshiba, as well as a few others.
Blu-ray backers state that it is superior because it has a higher storage capacity. HD-DVD supporters say that it is more compatible with current DVD technology. They further state that HD-DVD is less costly to make. The winner of this battle does stand to gain from patent royalties.
Apple's chief executive, Steve Jobs said, "Apple is pleased to join Blu-ray Disc Association board as part of our efforts to drive consumer adoption of HD."
