Today news is announced about 321 Studios offering a $10,000 reward to anyone who catches consumers using their software to make pirate copies of DVD films.
"321 Studios has rolled out a new product aimed at preventing illegal misuse of its products, DVD Copy Plus and DVD X Copy."
The program offers a $10,000 reward for information leading to the conviction of anyone misusing the software for pirating movies.
The move comes as seven major movie studios have requested a court ruling that 321 Studios' products are illegal under federal law and to prohibit the products from being sold.
321 Studios provides software that allows people to make a backup copy of a DVD in case of damage or loss. While a code in the software prevents users from making a copy of a copy, the company said it is putting additional safeguards in place to prevent the illegal use of the company's technologies.
"While we believe consumers should have the right to make perfect, personal-use backup copies of DVDs they already own, we are against the illegal use of our products," said Mike Wozniak, chief information officer of 321 Studios, in a statement. "Therefore we want to work with the entertainment industry and the government to prevent piracy, while continuing to protect, support and preserve consumers' fair use rights and technical innovation
