Today CDR-Zone got to test drive the 1Click DVD Copy Version 3 software from LG Software Innovations Inc
"Building on the ease of use of V2, version 3 brings in support for dual layer, as well as the new GUI which permits localization in any language, so they can expect French, Spanish, German, and Japanese versions to follow soon"
.

About the Software:
"1Click DVD Copy is a revolutionary product that allows you to make high quality backup copies of your DVD movies. You won't find a simpler DVD backup utility than 1Click DVD Copy. Best of all, our proprietary LG1X transcoding technology ensures perfect video quality. Just click the START button to copy a movie, it's that easy!"
"Now you can backup your favourite DVD movies with nothing more than a standard DVD+R or DVD-R burner and your home computer with our 1Click DVD Copy software. You'll never need to replace a lost or damaged DVD again."
The software can copy encrypted dvds if you first install the recommended utility
"DVD43Free" or any other similar decrypting utility. 1ClickDVDCopy even includes a free copy of VSO's rock solid burning software, CopyToDVD.

Key Features:
  • Dual Layer DVD Support
  • Simple and fast - copies most DVD movies in less than an hour.
  • Copy episodic DVD movies like the 'Simpsons' or 'Sopranos'.
  • Copy a movie to one DVD disc or save it on your hard drive.
  • No warning messages or anti-piracy tracking codes added.
  • LG1X encoding technology ensures perfect video quality.
  • Supports both NTSC and PAL DVD movies.
  • Free Technical Support.
Installation:

This software uses an installer from install.us.com and the software installs with its default settings that allow you to copy a movie only DVD (no extras for the best video quality) with English language audio.

You can modify these default settings in the Options dialog.

Usage:

Here you have the ability to select 3 Copying modes as well as some user definable advanced options:
  • AUDIO LANGUAGE:

Use this option to select one language as your preferred audio language. In cases where the language you've chosen is not available, it will copy using the default audio language on the DVD.

  • SOURCE:

Choose the DVD reader or hard drive folder that contains the movie files

  • DESTINATION:

Choose a DVD writer or hard drive folder where you wish to write the copied movie files.

The following four options are disabled by default, but can be enabled to meet your requirements:

  • INCLUDE EXTRAS:

Enable this option to include extras such as directors cuts and special features. When this option is disabled, you will get a "Movie Only" copy, which has the highest possible video quality. The option is disabled by default.

  • ALL LANGUAGES:

Enable this option to include all available audio languages on your copy. This option will require considerably more space on the disc and will lower the quality of the video on some movies. The option is disabled by default.

Please note: All subtitles (every language) are copied regardless of which settings you choose.

  • DTS AUDIO:

Enable this option to copy the audio (a high definition audio format similar to Dolby Digital). This option will require considerably more space on the disc and will lower the quality of the video on some movies. The option is disabled by default.

  • DUAL LAYER:

This option is disabled (unchecked) by default. When enabled, it permits you to copy and burn dual layer "DVD-9" DVDs directly to a dual layered media. In cases where the original DVD exceeds the maximum size of a dual layer recordable disc (8.5GB), 1Click DVD Copy will compress the video to ensure the movie fits the disc.

Note:If you do not have dual layered recordable media, this option should not be enabled.

Error correction comparison:

For this test a recorded DVD which we had problems reading past the final chapter on the main movie on a standalone player was put through each of the software listed in the below table. This was due to misuse and a scratch had appeared across the disc. The purpose of this test is to see if any of the software can recover the bad sectors and enable us to once again have a good working backup of our DVD Video

Software Tested Able to read and repair bad sectors
1Click DVD Copy Yes, after 10 minutes, the file bad sectors where corrected
Clone DVD Failed to read past bad sectors
DVD Fab Failed at 99% due to bad sectors
DVD Cloner would not load disc
DVD Shrink would not load disc
DVD Decrypter failed after 20 retries at 99%

As you can quite clearly see, there is only one winner in this comparison. Only one software managed to successfully read and correct the bad sectors present on this DVD, giving us the ability to back up what appeared to be a very troublesome DVD Video for all the other tested software.

We must stress that it is very often the case that even the best error correction cannot recover extreme cases of data corruption, but the DVD VIDEO we tried certainly played back fine without any video glitches being noticed at all.

Conclusion:

1ClickDVDCopy is completely user friendly and with just one click of a button, I had the ability to back up my entire movie to either a dual layer with no compression ( this is true upto 8.5GB, then compression wil be needed ) or single disc with compression. The entire process took less than 30 minutes for a 2 hour movie on my test machine. The resulting quality for the single layer recorded DVD was comparable to
DVDXCopyXPress, with very little noticeable reduction in video quality for such a long film and the colors where very vibrant. The default settings built into this software are very good for anyone who just wants a quick no fuss 1Click backup of their DVDs. Of course, my dual layer backup looked just like the original!, but it is nice to see such early support for this new media from LG Innovations.

All audio and video on the original DVD were present on the backup copy, and unlike some software, extra warnings where not added to the copy I made. I would have liked to see titleset preview ( although you do have the option to preview with a software player before burning ), and a 'per title' compression slider, but like I have already stated in this review, the quality was very good indeed.

This software does exactly what it says on the box so I'm sure a lot of people will use this software to backup their DVD collection.

One option that is not visible in this software, but is worth pointing out, is the built in error correction which the manufacturer says can recover almost all damaged DVDS as long as they can be physical read in your DVD Rom drive. Our error correction tests came out very favourable indeed, where 1Click DVD Copy was the only software to be able to correctly fix bad sectors available on this DVD Video.

So it seems that LG Innovations have kept to the things that made version 2 so popular - ease of use, making the DVD backup process as simple as it could possibly get.
