My DVD R/W Just Stopped Writing:Help!!

Glad I have found this forum!!
Please can somebody help me.
I was wanting to write several DVD's the other day and after the 5th DVD it just packed up.
I found that out when trying to write the 7th DVD Nero just wouldn't respond. I found also that the 6th DVD wrote was corrupt, though Nero told me it had wrote successfully.
My R/Writer still burns CD's and plays DVD-R and DVD+R.
After booting up, My Computer window sees the drive as a DVD R/W but as soon as I insert a blank DVD or any DVD-R/W it says it sees the drive as a CD-R!
Sounds to me that the drive is to put it bluntly knackered!! Unless someone knows any different.
Drive is Lite-On DVDRW SOHW-832S using firmware VSOM and running XP Home ServicePack 2 and Nero 6.6.1.4
This story is not finished! Could this be the problem?
I purchased an external DVD-RAM burner the day before and I had a problem that it was not writing to DVD-RAM disks. I called the store helpdesk who asked me to take it back for checking and I do not know the outcome yet. But before that I was using Nero 7 as version 6.6.1.4 was bundled with the new external writer. I do personally prefer Nero 6.
The new DVD-RAM drive is HP 940e, but told it was 940d by the software. On the data label the exact is 940E-XH08 manufactured Oct 2006. Windows recognised it as a DVD-RAM but would not format or write to DVD-RAM but did to DVD+/-R. Yes I did make sure the check box in properties and I made sure it was unticked for writing CD-R's.
Sorry my tale is a long one, but can anyone enlighten me? Have I given you enough info to help me?
Just tried to write a CD-R. Nero said burn successful at x40 then when verifying data all the write errors came up and burn failed. Now I'm sure the drive wants replacing.
Anyone like to comment?

Could you post us a log from Nero? Make sure the serial numbers are not included thought

Hi,
I performed a complete restart format "C" and reloaded software. I then successfully burned a couple of DVD's and a CD , then nero just wouldn't respond. Surely that proves DVDRW is o.k. DVDRAM drive returned to store and tested o.k. I then updated Nero to Ver 7.7.5 and again I successfully burned a DVD and then trying again Nero wouldn't respond, didn't even try and lead in! using either my internal Lite-On DVDRW or external HP DVDRAM. I left computer for a while and I then produced another corrupt DVD. Log is printed at the end.
So still after I insert any blank DVD and any DVDRW disc to either drive Windows sees both drives as CD-R's. Nero sees drives o.k. and tells me there is an empty disc inserted. All software tells me the drives are working o.k.
Could it be some hardware fault? Or is there a bug in Windows XP?
