Ok. I've dug around for the answer here, but I didn't see a similar problem. All I'm trying to do is burn DVD Video files to any DVD -R or +R. When I run a simulation it works. This is the first log file. When I do it for real, it never gets out of the Lead In Phase and it stay at 1% disc written. I've used Nero with my Plextor external DVD burner, but the sony offers dual layer, so I'd like to get this figured out. I done anything with filters and when I normally make DVDs, I use standar 4.5 G data and the DVD compatability is on. It was off in my simulation and trial. Thanks everyone, I'm stumped, because I've already replaced this drive under the vaio warranty. It plays DVD and everything else. I see a write error mentioned in the log, right after a key medium error. This usually indicates the media can't be written to properly. Have you tried different media yet? Have you tried a cleaning kit for the writer? I read somewhere you tried the filters, so we'll skip that. Hope it helps.

Hey, No I haven't tried other media yet. I have used a different program though. When I use the clicktoDVD software that came with the Vaio, I can burn homemade cd's without a problem. When I try to use Nero and burn video files, I get errors. It doesn't make sense to me, but oh well. I think this drive is a piece. I did run the filters thing and it said no upper filters were found and then it didn't say anything about the lower filters. I don't know what that means. I'll try a cleaning kit, but I think it's something wrong with the drive. Thank you! Kyle

You said it there yourself, you can burn homemade CD's OK, but not DVD's with Nero. I'd suggest you try another DVD media with the video files before dumping the drive for beeing broken.

Hey, I meant to say DVDs there. When I make a homemade DVD from my own video camera with the software that came with the computer, it will work, but when I copy DVD video files, it doesn't want to work. The media I have works with the other program, click to DVD, but I can't get them to work with Nero and bunring video files. Thanks again, Kyle

Have you tried to burn simple file data to DVD? This way you have a base line reference for testing. If that fails and you already switched media, the drive is most likely the culprit.

Ulukai, Thanks for the help. I tried the data DVD and I can't get that to burn, so the next step is the different media. Thank you! Kyle

A couple of things that could be useful in bugtracking: 1. Existing drivers: File 'Drivers\PXHELP20.SYS': Ver=2.03.19E, size=20576 bytes, created 10/21/2004 1:03:00 AM (Prassi/Veritas driver for win 2K) This may be causing some issues - this particular writer ahs a poor compat record with pxhelp20 2. Disc Manufacturer: FUJIFI - LM03 Not the best media to use !

I have a Dell notebook with SONY DVD+RW DW-D56A DVD/CD

I had trouble burning DVDs years back and stopped using them

I could get by with CDs

It even stopped reading the DVDs it had burnt long back

In between, I had a harddisk crash and got that changed.

The problem persisted

My computer showed dvd-rw drive e which changes to cd when a dvd is put in and it shows the dvd to be blank

DVD region not selected

I checked lower and upper filters. There was no upper filter and the lower filter was Pxhelp20

I downloaded the firmware rar file and changed it from pd57 to pfs3

I also downloaded from this site, the zipped files for "filters off" and "filters on" and also the "filters check"

I switched off filters, the problem persisted.

I switched on filters, and they became The Upper Filters are:
GEARAspiWDM
The Lower Filters are:
Pxhelp20
