Hello, I have seen a device at Wal~Mart that lets you connect the avi (rca plugs, yellow(video) and red and white(audio)) to your usb port.
It was in the clearence area at our local WM. I doubt it will allow you to back up store bought movies to dvd thou, but since I didn't buy one I can't be sure. There is also the option of buying a vcr/dvd r combo. I did buy one of these and it won't record store bought videos to dvd , but if you have some home movies on vhs it works great. good luck amd cya

The best way I find is to use a video recorder and dvd recorder and a scart lead. Play the video and record using the dvd recorder. I have no problems with it and have all my old vhs favourites on dvd

BestBuy sells a kit for about $40'ish, (or TigerDirect), it does have a strict min. memory requirement, but it shouldn't be a problem in most cases.
It records to HDD, then you can compress & burn as you desire with whatever you currently use to perform that. I just got thru doing my 12" vinyl lp's so i haven't tried this unit yet, but Will. For those needing a macrovision (brightness flashing) remover in your application, there's plenty around, MCM electronics has one on sale i think.

I found a guide about how to convert VHS to DVD. The author also recommended some software which can do this, including shareware and freeware. You may find the guide in google groups: How to convert VHS to DVD. Wish it's helpful for you.

I used a Avermedia EZMaker converter ( http://www.avermedia.com/EN/default.aspx?TYPE=default.aspx&TYPE=test.htm&PT=P45&tv_TCAT_POS=0&CATNO0=B&CATNO3=BAD1&CATNO2=BAD&IDX=0.0.3.0&CNT=3&CATNO1=BA )
to capture to the PC and was very pleased with it. My son is using it now to capture his 8 mm tapes.

You can find them for about $30 and they come with software that can be used to edit, author a DVD and burn. Or you can
use your preferred software.
