Congratulations one and all! You people are obviously the elite of the elite in terms of computer savvy and knowing how not to get sucker-punched and mugged by the system. I'm a newbie to computers - and I've just been taken to the laundry. Two weeks ago I signed up to buy the registration which I was told would allow me to download an unlimited number of movie torrent files - and this cost me $29 US - (or $38Australian). I then learned from others that I had been scammed. But I downloaded a few movie files anyway - and to help me watch these on my TV using my standalone DVD Player I purchased 'CopyToDVD' and 'ConvertXtoDVD' for the princely sum of $85US (or $112 Australian). And then I was sent a message by my ISP that as my Usage had reached 10GB they were now slowing my speed from 512/128 kbps to only 64 kbps... And so folks... Catch22. If I continue downloading (and uploading) torrent files - (most of the movies are around 750MB) - in very short time within each month I will find myself crawling along at a speed of only 64kbps. And so, consequently, I've dumped everything and gone back to zero. My CopyToDVD and my ConvertXtoDVD will just sit here on my desktop unused and mothballed because the SOBs who are my ISP want to impose a draconian penalty upon me each time my usage reaches a lousy 10GB. So it looks like I'm back to renting movies at 5 bucks a pop for new releases. What a gip!! Please, guys and gals - I need a group hug!! (.... or better than that - tell me how in blue blazer YOU guys avoid having your speed pulled back to a snail-pace 64kbps.... ? ) |

Hi Titanic and welcome to our forums I would certaintly check out other ISP's. It seems that you have fallen foul of the fair usage policy ( different ISP's implement this in different ways ) 10GB does not seem a lot but a lot of ISP's in UK are offering 2 GB caps Of course copytodvd can stil be used to record some movies/data or audio backups and convertx can be used for the files you do manage to get. |

| Thanks for your response, sirQUK. I'm on an Unlimited Plan with BigPond, and receiving this message from them came as something of a nasty surprise. I don't doubt that somewhere in their small print they have a clause about this 'shaping'^ which takes place once you've reached 10GB of usage within any given month - but I didn't know about it. I've now downloaded a usage meter so I can keep a constant eye on just how much I've used up for my monthly allowance before they ratchet me down to 64kbps. I have yet to learn the tricks which allow everyone else to avoid the same penalty that I've encountered after reaching a usage of 10GB. |

| There are any number of forums solely devoted to movie torrent downloaders, and eventually I hope to learn just how it is that these Great Unwashed countless legions of people are able to watch free movie files without incurring any penalty upon their internet usage speeds. |

I apologise. Ironic humour isn't always recognised as such.
I belong to Telstra BigPond, and I'm a bit nervous about what it would all involve if I were to jump ship and join up with another internet service provider. It scares the hell out of me.
Would I be sorry? Would I be jumping from the pan into the fire? |

I'm in the UK and i'm with virgin media/NTL.
20MB don't really get affected y they policy that much.
Althou few years back i was with plus net who never had any caps or sharping for while hitting 300gb a month i think i hit even higher useage than that lol but was great. |

| I moved this to here, based on post content, this is where it's better suited since it's more of an ISP thing then it is software help/problem issue... |
