| Hi guys - I have been using this CD/DVD RW burner for quite some time with very little problems. Here lately, it will not complete a burn onto a CDR (the same package of CD-Rs that I had been burning succesfully). I've tried Nero, Windows, and RealPlayer to burn a disc with no success. One time I had success when I forced TRACK AT ONCE ... but it must have been luck, because even that won't allow it to burn now. The consistent thing is that Nero will burn until 7% progress and then get stuck. The CD-r remains blank and re-usable (I know because I've taken these half-burned cds to another computer and burned audio cds succesfully). Below is my log file from a recent failed burn. I've tried all the different speeds (4x to 32x), disc-at-once, track-at-once, I've tried starting windows with no uncessary startup processes ... I've even tried different media and nothing. I have reinstalled Nero twice - reinstalled the CD drive's driver all to no avail. In the log below, it gives a "fixation" error, "illegal disc" erroe and "end track" error. I noticed somewhere on the forum that PXHELP20.SYS could be the problem ... but when I followed directions to fix it in the registry, my machine doesn't have the "Upper" and "Lower" fields to edit. Thanks for any advice you can give. Here's the log: Windows XP Microsoft 1A20-020K-0330-1726-8318-4416 Windows XP 5.1 IA32 WinAspi: - ahead WinASPI: File 'C:\Program Files\Ahead\Nero\Wnaspi32.dll': Ver=2.0.1.74, size=164112 bytes, created 11/2/2004 12:54:32 PM NT-SPTI used Nero Version: 6.6.1.4 Internal Version: 6, 6, 1, 4d (Nero Express) Recorder: <TOSHIBA>Version: TU55 - HA 1 TA 0 - 6.6.1.4 Adapter driver: <IDE> HA 1 Drive buffer : 2048kB Bus Type : default (0) -> ATAPI, detected: ? | Looks like media problems.. according to the log. Have you tried changing using different media? |

Yeah - I've tried three different types. One is the regular CD I have been succesful with in the past. The other didn't work and the third was a Maxell brand I bought stricly to test with - it didn't even show up as being a blank disc! The maxell brand CD caused the burning software to keep asking me to insert a disc even though I tried 3 different brand new blank maxells. Go figure. Last night, I took the drive apart and made sure it was not dusty or dirty. Put it back together and no succes. One other thing I failed to mention in the last post is the buffer progress bar stays blank and never "progresses" at all. I've put in an order on a new drive today - We'll see if the brand new drive works - if not, that helps me isolate the problem better I suppose. Thanks, Daniel

concerning the last but one line of your nero report: "Existing drivers: File 'Drivers\PXHELP20.SYS': Ver=2.03.28a, size=20640 bytes, created 8/1/2006 4:48:00 PM (Prassi/Veritas driver for win 2K) " I would try removing this driver and seeing if the problem persists. Was the writer/media combination working b4 you installed this? ( comes with a lot of software wether u know abuot it or not )

I tried to remove the pxhelp parameter using regedit but couldn't find the "Upper" and "Lower" promotcol that I read about changing... SO ... I took a chance and deleted the pxhelp.sys file from my system folder and it still didn't work/didn't help. I even uninstalled NERO, ITUNES and REAL PLAYER (the programs that burn CDs) ... and tried using only windows burning capabilities (on windows XP). No avail with either of those. If you can give me better instructions on how to properly remove that driver, I'll see if it helps. I dont' know how many times I've removed the drive and reinstalled the drivers fresh .. again to no avail. AND Yes, the combination of media and drive hasn't changed. I used to be able to burn, now I can't. Grrrrrrr Will drive you nuts. I keep firewalls and anti-virus pretty tight on my system, so I hope it's not that. Thanks for the suggestions.

UPDATE: I bought a new CD/DVD R/RW drive (from tiget direct for $20!) - installed it the other night and everything works fine. That tells me is must have been hardware. The Toshiba was 14 months old (so two months past the warranty life). Funny thing is the Toshiba will still read CDs and DVDs fine - just won't burn 'em.
