Hi....I'm just hoping somebody might be able to give me some advice. I went to start up my Sony Vaio Laptop (VGN-FS215S) this morning (though I have to admit to being a complete technophobe I do use my laptop extensively for work) only to be met by the message: "Windows could not start because the following file is missing / corrupt: WINDOWS/SYSTEM32/CONFIG/SYSTEM. You can attempt to repair this file by starting windows set-up using the original CD-Rom". Trouble is I'm a long way away from home at the moment - where this CD-Rom would be - though to be honest I don't remember ever seeing such a thing when I leafed through instructions etc. Just wondering is there anything else I can do and what will be the long-term effect / result - ie. will I loose documents etc when / if I repair. Thanks. Cal.

Hello, Sorry to see your having this problem, it is possible that you may not even a the cd. When you bought this computer was the operating system already installed for you? Or Did you have to buy an doperating system and have it installed? Most computers that are sold with the operating system already on it dont always provide the disc, however if you call the place you bought it from they will have to give you a disc or restore your pc for you at no charge. If they dont..... I would call Microsoft they will ask you the name of the store it was bought and the address and phone number there. Once you do that they will give you a disc if you didnt get one. I had to do that once. If there are files missing from you operating system you will need a restore disc. Very Happy

I encountered this problem when I was reinstalling XP Pro and after updating to SP2 on the Recommended updates, not Critical updates, on Microsoft site. After reboot it gives this message. What a pain. Well, here are the possible solutions: http://support.microsoft.com/kb/307545/ http://www.short-media.com/forum/showthread.php?t=24057
