plextor dvdr px-708a (3.0.0) firmware updated DL not working

Can anyone help? I wanted to copy a DVD movie (it is NTSC but can not be purchased here and it works on my dvd player) so i tried it on my dvd r drive. got message that i needed 7.6 gig but dvd only had 4.7. ok, i went on the web and found that my dvd r drive can be firmware updated to version 112 from 104 that it origially had. in the details it said that upgrade to version 108 will give me a DL capability. I purchased a dvd dl disk and though i had it solved, the problem is roxio (that i use to copy dvd) gives me a message that i have to insert dvd + or -r or dvd rw. nothing about dl and would not copy. of course if i insert dvd r it tells me there is not enough space. I do want to copy movies, preferably to dvd dl but flexible on this part I do not want to buy a new dvd drive I am not a computer wiz but can get by with instructions I got my firmware upgrade from Plextor site and here is what it said about update to DL, possibly i misread it: Version 1.08 Windows UpgradeDownload (File Size: 660KB) Date posted: September 21, 2004 Added support for reading of Dual Layer DVD+R media Added support for new +R and +RW media Improved write quality on Ritek and Gigastorage 4X media If DL is not possible for me, what are my options? Simplest would be best. Inexpensibe would be nice. The dvds will be played on TV through dvd player. I am not sure how much information is needed to make this work. Please help, i would really appreciate it.

Hi ebaskin and welcome to our forums The firmware update mentions reading DL only and I never got my 708 to record them. Dependent on money outlay I see two choices. The 111 from Pioneer which is very cheap and seems to have good support for many budget media vs the Plextor 760 which is expensive but is a premium drive with very good support for quality media. The Plex is the faster of the two drives for DL and records verbatim 8x DL at 10x where media quality allows.
