I have a Samsung TS-H552D 16x DVD Burner. The current media I'm using is Maxell DVD-R 8x. The burner is only 2 weeks old. In the past week or so, I've used it to burn approximately 25 DVD's. Today, I burned 3. The first Burn started at 8x and then averaged 70% of the time at 4x (even though I selected 8x as burn speed) This DVD looks like a bad burn as the back of the DVD has multiple shades of lines (not normal), yet the DVD plays fine in my DVD Player. My second copy was fine. My third copy once again averaged at 4x even though I selected 8x and it started at 8x. This copy doesn't have any strange lines and also plays well. Here's the graph I got for my 3rd DVD: I've only experienced this today. The other 25 or so copies I've made previously were fine. Any ideas?

Hi kutibah and welcome to our forums It seems the particular piece of media isnt capable of 8x. I have seen this before when the odd substandard piece creeps into a spindle. The different shades you are experiencing are where the different recording strats are used. Does this disc play?

Yes, the disc plays fine. It's weird because I didn't expect it to. Anyways, I just bought a 100 pack of 16x Taiyo Yuden DVD-R Media. Hope those are more reliable!

I would think as long as the samsung has good firmware support then u should have no issues Did you read my review of 2 different brands using taiyo yuden as their media of choice? http://www.cdr-zone.com/reviews/dvd_media_reviews/plextor_16x_dvdr_media_review_page_1.html http://www.cdr-zone.com/reviews/dvd_media_reviews/miflop_xtreme_16x-r_media_review_page_1.html

What's the difference between those and regular Taiyo Yuden. The only reason I bought that brand is because everyone recommends it and it has the highest compatibility with DVD Players.

In my experience there is no difference in overal quality and reliability. Different batches will vary slightly but the chances of getting a bad burn by using nay of the brands mentioned will be very low. Plextor claim an extra protective layer but i like either Very Happy

Ok, I just got my Taiyo Yuden 16x DVD-R's. I tried to burn the same image again, and here's the graph I got: Does that look normal? The thing that scares me the most is how every minute or so the burn speed suddenly drops and then rises again.

I would add that it sems your samsung is good at slowing down the odd dodgy piece of media as well as record the good stuff at its rated speed Very Happy
