Hello, I used Filter Check and got the log below. Please can someone tell me if there are any major things that need sorted? The reason for my post is my current burner (HL-DT-JT) LG GSA-4167B has started to give me burn problems with 8x Datasafe DVD minus's! I have had it for 3 months and havent overly used it wereas my old NEC was burned to death but lasted over a year! I can read other DVD's but the Datasafe ones I have burned to wont play in household DVD players and also wont be read by the LG even though it burned them? I get the "failed to read "D:\" "Data error (cyclic redundancy check) error which I presumed was due to a bad burn? I've just ordered some Bulkpaq DVD's that I used with no problems in the NEC. Any info would be a great help Thanks Spoon ************************* Filter Check Tool v3.4 An Upper Filter found is: GEARAspiWDM Filterdriver properties are: An Upper Filter found is: Cdralw2k Filterdriver properties are: An Upper Filter found is: pwd_2k Filterdriver properties are: A Lower Filter found is: PxHelp20 Filterdriver properties are: Name: PxHelp20 Caption: PxHelp20 Description: PxHelp20 AcceptPause: False AcceptStop: True DesktopInteract: False DisplayName: PxHelp20 ErrorControl: Normal ExitCode: 0 PathName: C:\WINDOWS\system32\DRIVERS\PxHelp20.sys Version Info: 2.3.28.0 ServiceSpecificExitCode: 0 ServiceType: Kernel Driver Started: True StartMode: Boot StartName: State: Running Status: OK TagId: 7 A Lower Filter found is: drvmcdb Filterdriver properties are: Name: drvmcdb Caption: drvmcdb Description: drvmcdb AcceptPause: False AcceptStop: True DesktopInteract: False DisplayName: drvmcdb ErrorControl: Normal ExitCode: 0 PathName: C:\WINDOWS\system32\DRIVERS\drvmcdb.sys Version Info: 3.22.7.0 ServiceSpecificExitCode: 0 ServiceType: Kernel Driver Started: True StartMode: Boot StartName: State: Running Status: OK TagId: 8 A Lower Filter found is: AFS2K Filterdriver properties are: Name: AFS2K Caption: AFS2k Description: AFS2k AcceptPause: False AcceptStop: True DesktopInteract: False DisplayName: AFS2k ErrorControl: Normal ExitCode: 0 PathName: C:\WINDOWS\system32\drivers\AFS2K.sys Version Info: 3.1.21.0 ServiceSpecificExitCode: 0 ServiceType: Kernel Driver Started: True StartMode: System StartName: State: Running Status: OK TagId: 1 A Lower Filter found is: Cdr4_xp Filterdriver properties are: Name: Cdr4_xp Caption: Cdr4_xp Description: Cdr4_xp AcceptPause: False AcceptStop: True DesktopInteract: False DisplayName: Cdr4_xp ErrorControl: Normal ExitCode: 0 PathName: C:\WINDOWS\system32\drivers\Cdr4_xp.sys Version Info: 7.5.0.47 ServiceSpecificExitCode: 0 ServiceType: Kernel Driver Started: True StartMode: System StartName: State: Running Status: OK TagId: 6

Hi Spoonkey and welcome to our forums. A few things can help here. Are you on the latest firmware for your drive? some drives need firmware uupdates to get the ebst out of media types.

That sound slike a bad piece of media - exactly what disc is this? Datasafe 4x, 8x or 16x media? it does sound like maybe the drive/media combimation are not working well together. Now bulkpaq media can be the same mid as Datasafe sometimes but Bulkpaq does have the ebst track record of both. I would recomend using some high quality media such as Verbatim or taiyo Yuden. I know its more expensive and less value for money but theres no value in a disc that cant be read:)

I agree with Sirquk on that and would like add to that if the filters were really an issue you'd have possible problems in both reading and writing the media. I've listed the filters with their uses as the tool has detected them, take a look. GearASPIWDM - Part of the Gear burning engine. Comes with iTunes and Drive Image 7.0. Cdralw2k - Used by Roxio Easy Media Creator, WinOnCD 6. pwd_2k - Used by Adaptec Direct CD. pxhelp20 - Part of Sonic Burning engine, it's made by prassi/veritas and licensed to Sonic. Comes with Winamp, 1click DivxToDVD and (older versoins of) Digion Audio. AFS2K - CD-Rom Driver by OAK Software and HP Memories Disc. CDR4_XP - Used by Roxio Easy Media Creator, WinOnCD 6, DragtoDisc and DirectCD. Do you use any of these programs? If so, you might wanna keep some or all of the filters, but maybe update them. There's also a new one I have to look into, drvmcdb. I'll get back on that one. **Update: drvmcdb - Part of Nullo software by Sonic and Veritas. Used by Veritas in backup software.

Thats all great help, I was using Datasafe -8x and was burning at 8x speed most of the time so I will also try to burn at 4x when the Bulkpaq DVD's come. I will look more into what you have both posted and see what outcome I get. I will post back with results on using the Bulkpaq 8x and if I still have problems I will look into removing some of the software. It may take a week or so as I have just ordered the DVD's. Thanks so much again P.S I always forget to post in the general forum to say hi so sorry for that.

Just to update about the Bulkpaq DVD's that arrived today. I managed to burn 3 DVD's with the Bulkpaq Branded 8x with what seems to be no problems, it mentions ADVDINFO: OPTODISCR008, whatever that means? However, the other Bulkpaq DVD's I also got were the Silver Frosted 8x and to say they are the worst quality is an understatement! The dye on most of them is patchy, marked, looks runny or missing in small places! I know you get what you pay for but these take the biscuit! I may be able to use about 5 out of the 50 I ordered! I will probably just bin them as it would cost more to send them back! ADVDINFO: INFODISC-R20 Edited to add that the DVD's I was having problems with were ADVDINFO: CMC MAG.AE1 If someone could explain the ADVDINFO thing I would be grateful as the OPTO ones seem good. Thanks for all the help

The ADVDINFO is the media id code which tell sus who made the emdia ( although this can be faked by some companies ) OPTODISCR008 belongs to optodisc who normally make samsung media amongst others. INFODISC-R20 is made by Infodisc and is normally very poorly supported by writers. CMC MAG.AE1 is made by CMC Magnetics and is usally of decent quality when the brand using it is good. The main thing to do when sourcing media is use reptuable brands which are known to be consistently good. I personally wouldn't use INFODISC as it is cheap and nasty most of the time in my experience. Know that media such as Plextor, Verbatim and Sony is only around £7.50 for 25 in UK , I don't see the need to use much else personally.

Thanks for that, its strange that the CMC MAG.AE1 being a good brand doesnt seem to work well with my writer, LG GSA-4167B. I will try the better barnds once I run out. Thanks again for the info

You can't rely on media codes alone. media can vary in grading from batch to batch. The best CMC based media I have tried ( upto now! ) is the HP/Infiniti/Ricoh branded versions.
