Hey Tony, We will try and guide you through some steps to make it working again. Let's start with the first step and fix things along the way. First we need to make sure nothing is bothering your Sony drive. Can you download the file i have attached? It will scan your system for any filters that may interfere with your Sony. Simply extract the zip file and run the file that is extracted, it will create a log file on your desktop, can you show it on this forum?

Hey Tony, This is exactly what I meant. Now we can work on temporarily turning off the filters. I've included 2 files, one is to turn off the filters(filters-off.zip) and the other is enabled them again(filters-on.zip). Can you download filters-off.zip, extract it and run it? (double click the extracted file) After it reports back that is has been succesfully added, you have to restart your computer. After the restart, test the drive again, to see if this fixed it. If it doesn't we'll put everything back as it was (filters-on.zip), and focus on another solution. Which reminds me, do you have a Dell machine or a Sony Vaio? Cheers,

Hey Tony, Let's try and update the firmware. You can find the firmware on the Sony site, or you can get it at this link. You have to extract the package and start the PFS3 package, this will update the firmware and after you restart, test the drive again. Let me know what happens. Cheers,

I suspected they might, it's an OEM drive, they don't offer to much support on that. Click here to download all firmwares up to PFS3. You need to extract it and execute the PFS3 package. The test the drive again. Cheers,

Sounds like the drive just fails at recognizing any media at all, maybe the laser lenz is dirty. Did you think of getting a CD/DVD-ROM cleaning kit?? Cheers,

Hi... I have a similar problem and have addressed this same post on the VAIO forum. I bought a VAIO VGN-FS215S some 9 months ago and it came along with a dual-DVD burner (Sony DVD RW DW-D56A). In the last few days I am unable to burn any dvds, (dvd-r, dvd+r, dvd+rw and dvd-rw). The Sonique software tells me either to use a branded dvd or clean the dvd from fingerprints and dust. So I tried using a sony dvd-r and still the problem lurks. So I uninstalled Sonique and put in Nero Burning ROM v6.3.117. It shows a different error now. It says unspecified target error. The funny part is I can still read cds and dvds and write cds but cant burn dvds !!! I tried a firmware update and still no luck. Then i tried putting in old firmware programs found on http://codeguys.rpc1.org/firmwares.html#cat_slimdvdrw and there is no change in the errors. Any help to this matter is highly appreciated. Thanks in advance. Regards AJ

PostPosted: Tue Apr 11, 2006 5:55 pm    Post subject: problem reading Audio CDīs with sony DW-D56A PFS3 Reply with quote

Hello everybody, I also have a similar problem. I have a sony vaio laptop VGN-A290F with the DW-D56A PFS3 optical drive (it already has installed the latests firmware upgrades Iīve found on the sony site) and Windows XP. It works perfectly (at least apparently) playing DVDīs, reading Data CDīs and Data DVDīs (also plays ok mp3s and MPEGs). The problem is playing and burning Audio CDs. When I try to play a CD It plays the song for only 2 or 3 minutes (some times more, the time varies to up to 20 mins **but only on the first play**) and after that it just stops playing. If I try to play again it does the same thing and it will go on like that for 1 or 2 more times until it stops playing at all. Then I have to reboot to make it play again. When I try to burn it burns it does the same, burns only the first minutes and then just silence. My question is, since I can actually play the song for some minutes can this be a hardware problem? My guess would be that if this was a hardware problem I couldnīt play anything at all, can you please share your thoughts on this? Thanks a lot
