| In my Pioneer DVR-108. Has anyone ever had similar experiences? On the same note, some cheap nexxtech DVD+Rs from Circuit City marked at 8x burned at 16x all day long.. |

Yes I found it only reached 12x under early firmwares. I never actually got time to see if later firmwares introduced a 16x recording strategy, but due to the way it reaches 16x, 12x is actually quicker on a 108 I always recomend sticking to 12x on this writer - its slightly faster than a 16x recording and much more reliable results are obtained. |

I was having the same problems so I found this forum. I've just updated the firmware to 1.20 and Nero (6.6.0.16) still doesn't recognize 16x as the fastest writing speed. SirQUK, is it really true that 12x writing is not only faster than 16x but also with less errors? A DVD5 is fully burned after about 6:50. I get the impression that this drive doesn't actually hit 16x. If it really is like this, then I'll listen to you and don't bother with 16x. |

Yes on some media, the time it takes the 108 to recalibrate from 12-16x actually means a 12x recording can be just as fast if not faster. The 108 uses a Z-CLV recording strategy for 16x writing ( starts at 6x, then goes to 12x at about 2gb and then 16x at about 4gb - not exact figures but close enough without digging out old test results ) Most writers now use a CAV strategy for 16x writing which is faster ( starts at around 6.6x and gradually increases to 16x in a curve rather than the stepped, zonal approach of Z-CLV ) I would say stick to 12x, I always go the impression that the 108 was forcing the 16x stage of the recording. Newer pioneers don't have this problem though ( if u want to class it as a problem - the 12x recording is normally very good as compensation for not making 16x ) |

| Thank you. I guess I'll stick to 12x then. It's annoying that Nero doesn't recognize the 16x option though. |

Hi there, I would not burn above 8x anyway, even on Quality Media. Personal Choice 16x burning is a Sales Pitch My 2 cents... |
