I'm using a teac dvd+rw dv-w58e dvd burner (came with the Dell pc as standard a while ago, but never used it until now) and can't get the thing to burn onto the dvd+r discs I've bought. Also it says that it's an invalid format (or something like that) when I try to copy a dvd-r onto a dvd+r disc, is this always the case, or just the software (Sonic) I was using? Any help as to what software I should use and what discs I should burn to would be great, cheers.

Hi Jim, the Glaws fan and welocme to our forums. Not every writer can write to DVD+R media which is true of your TEAC writer. You can either stick to DVD-R media or upgrade your writer to one that handles both formats.

hello strange but true: i also have a dell pc with exactly the same dvd unit - and only now have got around to trying to write to DVD discs (am trying to back up all my data). The DVD reader won't write to a HiSpace DVD-R 4.7Gb disc - I'd appreciate help as to why this is? Do I use other DVD discs or is the machine not designed of writing to DVD discs? .... i.e., how do I do it? Thanks Ray Very Happy

Hi Ray and welcome to our forums You will need a software such as copytodvd or nero burning rom. Did any recording software come with your dell? Both nero and copytodvd offer trial downlaods. I would suggest trying one of these and seeing if you can record to your media.

Thx SirQUK .... My Dell PC came with Sonic MyDVD and Record now. I have downloaded both programs also but to no avail. Also, I have checked the IDE settings and seem correct. Any other ideas? Thanks Ray

It may be that Higrade emdia is unsupported in the firmware you have on your drive. If you tried a nother emdia and that works we can rule out a faulty drive. I would deffo get in contact with dell and ask them for a dload link for the latest firmware for this drive. Another thing you can try is goto my computer>>>right click on your teac drive icon>>choose properties>>recording and make sure the burning engine support option is disabled if you are running XP.

Latest dell firmware is DS0N available Here Please check your DMA settings after upgrading. This should add the latest media support to your drives Smile

I've sorted the problem, thx. I upgraded the firmware form the Dell site and then tried a few different media. Interestingly, there are DVD +R and DVD - R discs (amongst others I guess) though these are not all compatible. I was using DVD -R and these were wrong - using DVD +R solved the problem. I'm told also that there can be issues with different brands. Maybe a single page on all the issues would help everyone ....

You are quite welcome to start a thread with the results of your burning on the TEAC drive as i'm sure a lot of Dell users have them too. In time it could become a very useful resource for dell owners Smile
