I bought a Phillips DVD8631/95 DVD burner for my Dell Dimensions 2400 back in January. I installed it and also the Sonic software that came with the drive (bought it off e-bay). I burned about 10 DVDs (just soccer games, school functions, etc.), but hadn't used it now for about one month. I went to burn a DVD yesterday and the drive won't even open. I've been trying different things (re-installed hardware and software, checked Device Manager and it says its working properly, switched my two drivers to see if it was the power, etc.). Not knowing tons about how computers work, can anybody give me some ideas (in laymens terms) of what could be the problem or how I can solve this issue? I would appreciate any info. Thanks.

Hi lablok and welcome to our forums. Well this is a strange one indeed. Located on the front of your drive should be a small hole which is used to eject the tray should the mechanism not work for any given reason. You could also try a new firmware located Here to see if that helps. I have not encountered this issue b4 oso I am open to answers to as why it could have happened.( barring mechanical breakdown of course)

Thanks for the response. Could you tell me what "Firmware" is? Also, when I turn the computer on, the drive light does come on for about 30 seconds. I did open it manually and inserted a game disc to see if it would read it and it didn't even acknowledge that a cd was in there. Any other suggestions? Thanks!!

Firmware is what the makers of your writer use to tell your writer how to read/write and new is always best as a rule for better media support. Its worth a try with that link i mention in last post. Execute the firmware, reboot and check your dma by following this guide from forum memeber jmet.

I ran a new firmware and while it was running the light was on the DVD drive. However, after rebooting and checking the DMA, it still will not open. Is it safe to assume that something mechanical is wrong? Thanks for all the info you've given me so far!!!

Yes I believe it is mechanical if the new firmware still has the issues. Able to RMA your drive? Drives delievered in systems such as dells/compaqs are usually OEM ( mass production) versions of the respective drives - you could have a bad one. I'm sure a quick phonecall to the company that sold it will be productive in getting a replacement. As for the help - it's why we here!
