Well I thought I was pretty good at this stuff until now... After installing nero and uninstalling it including using the nero cleanpack uninstal util, my drive doesn't mount/read/play cds of any type (spins a little then stops) it won't even boot from cd.. however it has no problem with any dvd including video, burning blanks etc.. Now I know that alot of people might say that the laser for the cd is dead (not sure where to find a util that will verify that.. there might be one on the dell disks.. but I can mount cds) However I suspect that it's a setup/software/registry issue as this all happend since I tried installing nero. I noticed in these forums that there is a filter check util... so to get things started I've run it with this result The Upper Filters are: No Upper Filters found. The Lower Filters are: No Lower Filters found. any help would be greatly appreciated system: dell inspiron 8600 xp

do u have system restore switched on? Since this only seemed to have happened since Nero went in I would at least try a system rollback to see if the issue remains. I once had a Plex drive that went down whilst installing a software - coincidence or just bad luck? Sometimes it can happen that drives break at unconvient times ( and can look like something has caused the issue when it may not of ) but if you can read DVD's it's a good sign IMO. The fact that no filters are installed which may intefere is a good sign that your system is good. The fact you can't boot from the Dell system disc ( this is the one i'm assumig you are trying to restore you system ) is worrying though.....
