If you have the Sony DRU-510A like I do, you know it is riplocked at 2X. While searching for some modified firmware for it (didn't find any though) to improve the ripping speed (remove the riplock). I stumbled upon this very helpful add on/plug in for the Sony DRU-510A drive. It is called "DSS (Drive Speed Selector)". It basically optimizes the read and write speed of the drive. You have to fill out a survey first before you can download it, but it is well worth it! I increased may rip speed from a max of 2X, up to 15.6X on a single layer DVD. Go here to download it: http://sony.storagesupport.com/dvdrw/dru510adwn.htm (Iv'e got mine in Overdrive mode) This also works with the Sony DRX-510UL drive.

Very interesting find jmet. Do you have any screenshots of the speeds available for the different options?

Below are screenshots actually taken from the .pdf help file that came with the DSS software (Unfortunately, it looks like Sony is not offering the software to download any longer. I will be more than happy to email the .zip file to anyone that wants it. Just post your email. Smile ):
