Hi, My DELL Laptop (Inspiron 6000) has a Sony DVD+-RW DW-D56A, which as per the product description can write to both DVD+R and DVD-R. While I have been using DVD-Rs for the past one year successfully, I can't seem to write to Philips DVD+R discs (1-16x) bought recently. I am using Roxio Creator 8 Deluxe Suite, and it shows me that my drive can write to DVD-R only. Why is this? I have checked multiple sources on the Net, and at different places I have found people using the same hardware as mine, and using DVD+Rs, but unable to use DVD-Rs. Is this a generic problem of first usage becoming default, or something? Please guide.

In Ulukais thread I linked to there is a link to manual removal of lower filters. Direction listed are:
Quote:
Manual steps to delete the UpperFilters and LowerFilters registry values that can cause CD access problems Warning Serious problems might occur if you modify the registry incorrectly by using Registry Editor or by using another method. These problems might require that you reinstall your operating system. Microsoft cannot guarantee that these problems can be solved. Modify the registry at your own risk. To manually delete the UpperFilters and LowerFilters registry values, follow these steps: 1. Start Registry Editor (Regedt32.exe). 2. Locate the UpperFilters value under the following key in the registry: HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE\SYSTEM\CurrentControlSet\Control\Class\{4D36E965-E325-11CE-BFC1-08002BE10318} 3. On the Edit menu, click Delete, and then click OK. 4. Locate the LowerFilters value under the same key in the registry: HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE\SYSTEM\CurrentControlSet\Control\Class\{4D36E965-E325-11CE-BFC1-08002BE10318} 5. On the Edit menu, click Delete, and then click OK. 6. Quit Registry Editor.NOTE: After you remove the Upperfilters value and the Lowerfilters value, if you notice lost functionality in a particular program, such as CD recording software, you may need to reinstall that software. If the problem recurs, consult with the software vendor for assistance. 7. Restart your computer.

Sorry for the late response. SirQuk is doing a great job already. I reckon its the drvmcdb and the sscdbhk5 filters in combination with pxhelp20. I've found that earlier versions of sscdbhk5 caused blue screens. Can you tell us if you have any programs installed by Veritas or Sonic? Backup solutions? Imaging products? The filters I mentioned before are from those manufacturers, but its unclear with which software they are installed. The problem with some lowerfilters is that they install services too which, in some cases, need to be stopped and preferrably deleted too. Let us know if you need some help in that section as well. I've update the filters post to reflect these new filters found. Cheers
