I have a question. I Checked for upgrades on my DVD burner. I just got my new compter in July. I found a upgrade for it, but it said that if I did it wrong. I could possibly destroy my burner. How hard is it to upgrade the firmware on a DVD drive? I have a NEC ND-3540A 16x Double-Layer Multi-Format DVD Writer. Sorry if this question is stupid, but thought I would ask. Bill PS I saw the post about NEC firmware.

Hi Bill Sorry for the late reply! If you use firmware from respected sites you should be fine. Just make sure that best results that you are in safe mode and that no disc is in the drive at the time of flashing. Firmware updates can greatly help in media compatibility and is recomended procedure. Then again if you are not experiencing issues it could be a case of 'if it aint break don't fix it'. You may also want to make sure that DMA is enabled after flashing your drive with new firmware ( link to DMA guide Here )

Thank You! I really do appreciate it. I just don't want to mess up my computer. It is less then a year old and I paid over $1,500 for it. If I do get a problem. If I reformat it and install the drivers for it, will it be ok? I really like this PC and don't want to mess it up. I have a friend who is a Computer tech. Maybe I should ask him..LOL.. I don't like bothering him over simple things though. Also, Since I bought my PC in July. Could it be that I don't need any firmware at this point? Can you recommend sites For NEC Firmaware. That is the burner I have. I saw the link you provided. I am just not sure how to use it. Thanks again for replying though. Bill PS I saw a post for NEC software on here. It did warn me though.

Latest firmware for 3540 is available here: http://www.de.nec.de/software/2325_FW_ND-3540A_win104.zip You can upgrade easily from fw 1.01-1.03 with this. Make sure no disc is in the drive and that all un needed programs are shut down. A reformat wil not affect the drive as ithe firmware goes to the drive only and not your PC.
