Half D1 resolutions would be an extremely desirable feature

I think this would be a very useful feature, especially as I imagine this app is used extensively for TV shows etc. It would be nice to cram a few more eps onto a single layer DVD. Or even a double layer one.

Here is list of specs on DVD - I would like to see Half D1 and VCD resolutions included. Many users are transferring their old VHS to DVD, and VHS resolution is about the same as Half D1 when tape is good, bad tape is VCD quality. VCD quality means roughly four times as much video to same DVD, so we might get up to 16 hours on DVD5.

Screenshots? Only real use would be to show amount of detail in them, but as originals are from different sources this is not good way to check quality. But - normal TV is same as Half D1, most videorecorders lose a little quality when recording and played back, so their quality is VCD standard. Only real use at the moment for better resolution is DVD (or DivX-compatible player) used with Full D1 resolution. HDTV is coming but it is not so common yet. Some idea about what happens to VHS when grabbed and converted to Full D1 - original picture has only 480 scanlines (NTSC) so it can not hold more than 480 pixels of data. This is worsened by fact that it is interlaced; so every other line is in every other picture, lowering real resolution to 240 pixels on NTSC. Now - to convert this original (352x240/480pixels) to Full D1 (720x480pixels) requires program to either add pixels or duplicate them because original simply does not have enough. Simple effect of this can be seen when you watch a picture that is lo-res and enlarge it to fill screen - pixels are duplicated and it does not look good. Half D1 on TV however - user normally does not even see the difference, because TV is not showing digital pixels and because TV resolution is close to Half D1. Only way to spot difference between Full D1 and Half D1 is to convert a movie that has lot of details in both formats and compare them.

Then again - from small original you can get quite ok big screen version, point is that why use big screen when original is lo-res and it can not get any better when inflated? Using small screensize allows up to 4x video.

Version 2.2.3 or higher can be changed to HALF D1 if you edit a registry setting.

\HKCU\software\VSO\ConvertXToDVD\settings\img_processing\output_resolution_mode

change the string there from

ORM_FULL_D1

to

ORM_HALF_D1

then open ConvertXToDVD and when you convert it will force res to 352x480 for NTSC, 352x576 for PAL
