| I bought 50 of these discs for £10 in a shrink pack at Wilkinsons on a buy one get one free offer. I am fairly new to DVD recording both on PC and under-the-tv(UTT) box recording. But so far have had no problem with surprisingly either Tesco DVD+RW or Mr-DVD-RW (Staples) discs. Transporting either way from PC to/from UTT box or to other DVD player only, +/-RW PC drives or UTT boxes has given no problem except a couple that refused the +RW discs point blank but took the -RW discs OK. However these Mitsubishi discs have (14 used) so far had a over a 90% failure rate. I bought them to record the best Xmas films on TV for future use. Some will record and play OK on the recording device until finalisation is attempted. Then you get either disc error and the disc will not play on anything at all or a disc that freezes every few frames or drops out completely. Only success I have had is on PC where I have a DVD player and DVD+/-rewriter in experimentally copying a Sunday paper freebie movie. The one copy plays on anything! As Verbatim, one of your highest rated brands, and Mitsubishi are synonymous what is wrong?? (I used to sell equipment to the Mitsubishi Infonics factory in Limerick RoI where most European distribution Verbatim brand products are made) Should I try an alternative make of DVD-R? |

| Hi mediumgrey and welocme to the forums If I read your post right then you have no issues with the Mitsubishi media when recorded on a PC, but only when recorded on your standalone device? Also for the most part, the RW media is working fine? ( the odd one failing could be result of short lifespan after x amount of rewrites or simply the disc is in need of a full wipe ) Do you know what the media Id of the Mitsubishi media is? ( I would suspect MCC02RG20 but you never can tell nowadays ) To get to the Media ID simply downlaod and Install VSO Inspector , insert a disc into the drive and goto the media tab. |

| Many thanks for welcome and your reply SirQUK. Firstly - slight misunderstanding. I have had writing problems on 2 of these DVD-R's on my PC DVD-Rewriter - but the only success Ihave really had with these discs is the event I described in previous posting. Also the reason that I could not get the +RW discs to play was that the 2 players (one PC [HP], one UTT [early Hitachi]) were almost certainly not +R/RW compatible and only accepted -R/RW. Regret I cannot download suggested software as get error message "hhttp is not a registered protocol" (sic). and then nothing on OK. Never seen a message like this before - probably done at least 20 similar downloafds of freebie S/W in last 3 months? Also will post message under different heading in forum as despite several Google searches do not seem to get info for S/W on my desired use of UTT DVDR and PC devices. |

Might explain your issues with this media. I could only get working backups upto about 3.7GB. |

| Hi SirQUK Its nice to hear that you also found these DVD-R's to be of poor quality. How do they appear under the highly reputable names of Mitsubishi or JVC? Who makes them? Are they fakes? Do I have grounds to go back to the shop and get my money back? (Its the principle not the £10) Should I report this to trading standards? I am beginning to realise that whilst digital media can give the best quality, unless the media is of virtually perfect quality then probably forget it! At least VHS dropouts were a momentary and a non fatal event. Surprisingly the best standard VHS tapes I have ever used were Mitsubishi Black Diamond 180's. So you can see why I thought I was getting an incredible bargain with these DVD-R discs. I am probably one of the few who take the trouble and have the time to search for forums such as this and find out why things are not working. At the price offered (20p/disc)these discs and similar packs of +R discs were disappearing off the shelf at a phenomenal rate just before Xmas. How did Joe Public get on when he found that 90% of his recordings fell over? Or did he blame it on the DVD recorder manufacturer. Thinking about it why is there not an ISO standard for DVD/CD media? There seems to be an ISO or EC standard for everything else I buy |

I thought I had got unlucky and found a batch that was sub standard until your last post but now it seems that they are just as bad for you. I suspect Joe Public very rarely burns a full disc and I also suspect they are fine for data backup. If you think you have a bad batch I would take them back and have a word with the ppl that sold them you. of course they will proabrly say you are the only one to ever complain ( the usual excuse ). Its hard to get media exchanged unless you buy from companies such as SVP online. they will take back poor media and replace them |

| Look forward to your feedback on these discs if u get some from Wilkos, I had another crash today with one of these discs again on experiment copying off air finalized +RW recording on PC. Just got disc error after about 75%. Finalized +RW plays Ok on both DVD reader +/-drive and read write +/-drive although noticed that play aborted on former if more than 4X fast forward attempted. |

| Hi SirQUK Have you been to your local Wilkos yet to get any of these disks? I went to my local Wilkos today for the first time in a few weeks and they are still selling them alongside similar +R packs. Thing is that the "241" offer has ended and the shrink wrapped packs of 25 are now £10 per pack. I tried to return my original purchaase but it ws rejected on:- There is something wrong with your DVDR You haven't returned all the discs (I chucked some in the bin) and as you said "Nobody else has complained abot these disks!" I will write to Mitsubishi in Japan. (My brother in law achieved remarkable results when he wrote to Sony Japan about a problem with his new TV that Sony UK just ignored!) Mediumgrey |

Hi again mediumgrey I just got an email from Verbatim-Europe stating that the brand you have is not made by the same ppl that make their media. Infact they are two companies with similar names only. | Quote: | | For your information the Mitsubishi company responsible for these products is Mitsubishi Electric based in Dublin, Ireland. Neither we or our parent company, Mitsubishi Kagaku Media Corporation, have any formal connection with Mitsubishi Electric and we do not supply them with any optical discs or floppy discs. | I hope this clears up the confusion as to why they are not of Verbatim grade or quality. |

Wow! This is incredible! So This Irish Mitsubishi in Dublin is allowed to foist off vastly inferior DVD's using the highly respected Mitsubishi brand name and Logo....? Whereas the Mitsubishi factory in Limerick Ireland manufacture and supply the equally highly respected Verbatim brand products. I know as I worked for a supplier of equipment to that factory that they had extremely stringent quality standards. As this company obviously took the trouble to view this forum for quality issues that might relate to its products it immediately gets my vote - I shall definitely try a pack of Verbatim DVD-R's for use with building my library of off air movies |

Verbatim are keen to make sure that any issues with their media found here on the zone forum are dealt with and we have very good relations with them I hope you have some good burns with your Verbatim media. Please let us know your findings. |
