|
|
The idea of this thread is to make readers aware of the difference in quality of a proper offical Taiyo Yuden 8x DVD-R media against other known 'fake' versions. Copying a Media ID code is not illegal and many companies ( mainly chinese ) produce their discs with a fake Media ID code that makes users believe they are official Taiyo Yuden at a bargain price - Please don't be fooled and check back here often - As I can source them I will post the results here but please do not hestitate to add your findings to our thread. So far here is the list of tested media and our recommendations for recording speed and observations - I will update this first post as new results arrive. Miflop Xtreme 8x DVD-R: Official TYG02 and best quality is achieved as a result with 12x recording the expected Taiyo Yuden high quality. Long term archivability should be very good. Dataon 8x DVD-R: Fake TYG02 but should stay usable with recomendation to stay at 8x recording speed - Should retain data well for short to middle term backup needs. Fortis 8x DVD-R: Fake TYG02 and use with caution and expect low speeds for best results. Backup up quickly if important data is stored on these discs. Mirror Platinum 8x DVD-R: Fake TYG02 and do not record past 8x and any more than 3.5GB - expect to lose data very quickly and should be fine for very short term backup only. Hyundai Gold 8x DVD-R: Fake TYG02 and although the whole of the disc seems usable. Short term backup only is recommended at 8x max recording speed. Bulkpaq Orange 8x DVD-R: Fake TYG02 and again even though it managed to stay just readable. The long term archivability of this disc is non existent - 8x max recommended and backup up to a good disc very quickly.

First up lets show you what an official Miflop branded Taiyo Yuden 8x DVD-R media looks like at the now accepted optimun speed of 12x for this media in the new NEC 3540 although this media can record successfully at 16x on many writers. To be noted is the very low PI errors and PI failures that is to be expected from an offcial Taiyo Yuden media even at an overspeed of 12x.
Description:
Nothing wrong with the recording. The Miflop records at 12x without an issue.

Next up is a Dataon 8x DVD-R media being advertised as having the Taiyo Yuden TYG02 media id code. You will note that this version records successfully, has a very nice transfer curve at maximum speed on the NEC 3540 just like the official Miflop version but it has 4x as many PI Errors and 12x more PI Failures - still a very good recording but not in the same league as a proper one. This is one of the better 'fake' TYG02 media we have found for use with the NEC 3540.
Description:
Just like the official version - a successful recording at 12x.

Description:
Here you can see the real difference. Unlike the official version the results show badly written pits with a no clear space between them and an almost squashed appearance towards the end of the disc. This will become unreadable and give issues much quicker than the Miflop version.

Our next disc is the Hyundai 8x DVD-R ( again fake ). It managed 12x recording in the 3540 but it was slower than the others we have tried so far. The PI errors and PI failures are truly awful and the badly written pits are easily seen in the PxScan result. this will not last well at all and already you can see how the NEC 3540 struggles to read the end of the disc.

Next up is Fortis TYG02 ( again fake ). This version can not even manage 12x but I have to say that because of the lower recording speed a readable disc is recorded. This is a testament to the NEC 3540's AOPC than the actual disc. Very slow and nowhere near Taiyo Yuden quality but not a bad result compared to some we have seen - at least it should be usable for a while.
Description:
About as ugly as it gets with a very slow recording at 12x selected speed. Clearly seen is NECS AOPC slowing down this media.

Here's a Mirror branded TYG02 ( again fake ). I reviewed thes early last year and they where not as bad then as this one which is horrid as they come refusing to finish both a transfer test and PXScan without throwing up errors along the way. Everything about this disc says 'don't buy me'. It's deffo been beaten with the ugly stick!
Description:
Athough it managed at 12x recording for upto 3.5gb, the last 1 GB of the recording looks dodgy.

A transfer test on the disc failed towards the end. Uncorrectable errors mean very high PI Failure rate and extremely badly recorded Pits near the end. But we shall check that next....

UGLY! thats all I can say. It's hard to find an even half decent written pit here. although the jitter/beta is good, theres no way a pit like these near the end will ever be read without issues.

Forum member gb has just sent me a Bulkpaq branded TYG02 [Fake] to test and show the results to our readers - Cheers gb! This one couldn't make 12x either and the resulting quality tests in KProbe and PXScan show very worrying amounts of errors and very badly written pits even with the NEC 3540 managing to slow it down to try and preserve some sort of quality. It's readable now but for how long is very questionable. Another one thats been beaten with the ugly stick!
Description:
The recording didn't make 12x and slowed down as it tried to get to 12x. 8 mins is still ok but nowhere near a 12x recording.
