--------------------------------------------------------------------
Read ALL of this post, here is a lot of solutions to most common problems.
If these are not helping, make new thread and include:
- detailed description of problem
- ConvertXtoDVD log from C:\Documents and Settings\[USERNAME]\Application Data\Vso
- system specifications (CPU, HDs, OS)
--------------------------------------------------------------------

Something to consider about:
Fact: Clean windows installation, legal copy of CxD, not a single problem that is not being traced to original file.
(ok, not counting some real bugs, but they are fixed pretty fast by VSO)

Fact: Anything extra on your system is likely to mess things up. Every cracked program is huge risk
    - you can not know how good coder that cracker was or that did he install some of his own code in there.
Every extra "gadget" or "enhancement" can also mix things badly.

Now read on to actual FAQ part.
Most questions are already answered before. So, if you have problems using ConvertXtoDVD, check these first.

1. Using ConvertXtoDVD.
Here is beginners guide to using ConvertXtoDVD
http://www.bitburners.com/Guides/DVD_Movie_Backups/ConvertXtoDVD/
Here is official manual:
http://download.vso-software.fr/manual/ConvertXtoDVD_manual.pdf

2. Video codec.
Most formats are working ok with ConvertXtoDVD.
ConvertXtoDVD will report if codec is either not supported or not working yet.
Wmv3 works with ConvertXtoDVD! (some rare files have problems converting though)
Some WMVs are DRM protected, they CAN NOT be converted with ANY software without removing protection first.
Special case - Matroska (.mkv). Matroska is not fully supported simply because it is NOT a video or audio compression format (video codec). It is an envelope for which there can be many audio, video and subtitles streams, allowing the user to store a complete movie or CD in a single file. Some of those files might convert just fine, some can not be converted. Future versions of ConvertXtoDVD might include full support - but as Matroska is still being developed, this might be impossible.

3. Filesize.
ConvertXtoDVD is producing very efficient dvd-data. Most movies will use between 2 and 4 Gb after conversion. DVD-R or DVD+R can hold 4.7GB of data, dual layers a bit over 9GB. Real amount of data however is not shown this big; DVD5 is about 4300Mbytes, not 4700.

4. Sound issues.
ConvertXtoDVD uses AC3 sound. If your original has 6 channels (Dolby 5.1) then conversion result will have it too. Movies with less channels will usually be converted to 2-channel AC3.
If you have sound problems after conversion, check these threads:
No audio -

Low volume -
http://www.cdr-zone.com/forum/viewtopic.php?t=2358
http://www.cdr-zone.com/forum/viewtopic.php?t=1857

Since 2.1.10 CxD has audio amplify setting!

And most important:
(from http://www.dvdreview.com/html/dvd_myths.html)
Quote:
4. Audio level too low. In truth the audio level is too high on everything else. Movie soundtracks are extremely dynamic, ranging from near silence to intense explosions. In order to support an increased dynamic range and hit peaks (near the 2V RMS limit) without distortion, the average sound level must be lower. This is why the line volume from DVD players is lower than from almost all other sources.

Audio delay -

5. Converting multiple files.
Converting multiple files is easy. Just select files you want with fileselector. If you try to select multiple files at once, please check their order as windows is putting your current selection (file that your cursor is on) as first file. It is not checking filenames or numbers. After selecting all files and one destination folder, press convert. After conversion is finished, change name of folder containing converted files to a bit easier name. ConvertXtoDVD is making menu with selectable title names etc. if you want. You can also opt to autostart first file, play all sequentially or just show menu first.

6. Disk issues.
- Defragment the hard disk before encoding any large (> 1GB) project - I've had crashes/failures that run just fine after a simple defrag
- Make sure that the destination directory is EMPTY. If you have other similarly named projects in the target directory, the encoder may become confused. Rename (even temporarily) any existing directories to "safe" names. I use names like "junk", "OldVersion", etc.

7. Overheating.
Converting videofiles is very CPU consuming, so your system might overheat. If you encounter random crashes then check your system temperature. Even overheating RAM might cause crashes as well as overclocked CPU.

8. Problems with large files.
This topic describes thoroughly symptoms and provides fix for MPEG-conversion problem that occurs with large (over 4Gb files):
http://www.cdr-zone.com/forum/viewtopic.php?p=17250#17250
Note: same problem might apply to ANY file that is over 4Gb!
ConvertXtoDVD has this fixed for most fileformats!

9. Adding subtitles.
ConvertXtoDVD supports subtitles in srt - text format and sub/idx pair format. If there is subtitlefile with same name as avifile then ConvertXtoDVD picks it automatically. Other method is to open avi with ConvertXtoDVD, then click on that avis information in main ConvertXtoDVD window, rightclick and select "add subtitle channel". Then select file to be used, check that language is correct, select font you want to use and other options. Last - Convert!

Here is official guide:
http://www.vso-software.fr/faq/add_subtitles_to_dvd/add_subtitles_to_dvd.php

10. TV formats.
Always select TV-format that matches one that is used on your area unless you have multi-format system. PAL DVD in NTSC system might cause jumpy, rolling or skipping picture or parts might be not visible, or then disk is not working at all. NTSC in PAL system might be black and white or just not working at all.
Subsection of TV-formats - Aspect ratio and overscan.
DVD can have only 4:3 or 16:9 AR video. No matter what your original is, DVD can use only those two.
ConvertXtoDVD will try to select best option, so normally use it on "automatic".
If you really want to force it to 4:3 then select it. This will produce letterboxed video.
If you are not seeing full video - check settings on your DVD player.
For 16:9 TV select 16:9, but for 4:3 TV select 4:3 Letterbox. NOT 4:3 Pan&Scan.
Some TVs are set to use too big overscan area, so your converted video is not looking like it does on computer.
Read this thread for info on how to check your TV overscan:
http://www.cdr-zone.com/forum/viewtopic.php?t=4868

11. Burner not showing.
If ConvertXtoDVD can't find your burner, check that Patin Couffin is properly installed from it's log: My Documents\PcSetup\PcSetup.log
If Patin Couffin is not properly installed, it will not see your burner in the software. It should be installed when you install ConvertXtoDVD, but some programs interfere with this.

12. Version
Always check that you have latest version installed.
Current release version is shown here:
http://www.vso-software.fr/
If you have version that is newer than one listed on that page, then you have beta-version. Beta-versions can have problems, users test them at their own risk.
--------------------------------------------------------------------
If these are not helping, make new thread and include:
- detailed description of problem
- ConvertXtoDVD log from C:\Documents and Settings\[USERNAME]\Application Data\Vso
- system specifications (CPU, HDs, OS)

--------------------------------------------------------------------

This FAQ will be updated from time to time.
