DVD NeXt Copy is the new kid on the block and offers the user a wide range of options as well as a very good compression engine with different levels of quality control. You also have a choice of supported external software such as AnyDVD or machinist for on the fly encryption. It is also Vista compatiable and comes in many flavours including a USB pen version!

1ClickDVDCopy is amongst the most user friendly software titles tested with great ease of use, amazing tech support and is extremely quick on supported devices. There is no split feature but the good compression engine makes up for this. It also as the added bonus of a free limited copy of CopyToDVD from VSO software.

DVDFab is the only one of the tested software to offer fully intergrated CSS decyption. If you feel comfortable splitting if needed as well as compressing, this is the one to go for.

DVD95Copy comes from one of the pioneers of transcoding and has been around a long time. It offers many options as well as selective compression for every title in the DVD backup and is also the cheapest software tested. It was not as user friendly as DVDNeXtCopy, but it was a good all round DVD backup software with a very nice compression engine.

CloneDVD comes from the makers of CloneCD and offers the user a wide range of options as well as a very good compression engine. The split mode was very hard to get used to but the wizard style interface was good for a new user.

A word from SirQUK - who tested all featured software:

I cannot really fault any of the tested software when it comes to the compression methods used (if any). 1Click was by far the fastest but then again, to the naked eye, DVD95Copy may have been a little sharper although it was upto 3 times slower than 1Click. The 'new kid on the block' DVDNeXtCopy, was packed full of options including seperate compression options and the ability to control each individual titleset. While testing a lot of things where taken into consideration. How easy was the software to use, did it have all the required options for a good backup, could you choose the main movie only for maximum quality, and was the software easy to use.

Other things taken into big concideration included customers support and ease of access to the developers of the software. As we host a lot of the official forums for software used in this comparison, support should be of very good quality. For its amount of features and as it offers a version to suit almost any pocket, our choice goes to DVDneXtCopy.
